The great thing about most Asian countries is that the food is delicious and cheap, and Malaysia is no different. Of course you can find McDonalds and Burger King if you are so inclined, but for a real good feed that is dirt cheap, head to the local hawkers. I haven’t really seen a western equivalent, but I guess it is like the restaurants we get in food courts, only they stand alone and don’t have entry door. Most are sheltered though with roofs and an open air door. You’ll know them when you see them, and they are everywhere. Most sell the same type of things but with slight differences depending on where the owner comes from, e.g. Halal, Chinese, Malaysian, Indian etc (halal won’t serve pork).

As a general tip, go to the ones that are packed with locals, however, certain stalls are ‘famous’ for certain foods. There is one in KK that is famous for boiled eggs. It is ALWAYS packed, but only serves bread, boiled eggs and drinks, and the eggs aren’t anything special (they’re just boiled eggs!) Apparently it has been running like this for over 40 years!

Now most of the ‘waitresses’ in these Hawkers don’t speak too much English so you will need to know how to order. Also, as I found out, you should specify exactly what you want otherwise you may get a few surprises. If the place your at is famous for their Birds Nest Soup, then that is what you’ll get in your soup unless you say ‘No Birds Nest Please” Below are a few useful words when ordering. I’m not to sure about the spelling so Ive spelled it phonetically, which is generally how things are spelled in Malay anyway.

Mee – Noodles
Mee Hoon – Thin Noodles
Mee Goreng – Fried Noodles
Mee Hoon Sup – Thin Noodle Soup
Daging Babi – Pork (Daging means meat)
Nasi – Rice
Ayam – Chicken
Nasi Ayam – Chicken Rice (A popular ‘take-away’ style meal)
Nasi Lemak – Another type of rice dish
Ikan – Fish
Perut – Stomach (Tripe)
Tidak – No
Sila – Please
Dilarang – Don’t
Saya Mao – I want
Saya tidak mao perut – I don’t want stomach
Sayur – Vegetables
Tandas – Toilet
Roti Canai – A pankake type bread dish usually served with some type of curry
Minum – Drink
Makan – Eat, Food
Minum Air – Drinking Water (Make sure it is bottled)
Kopi – Coffee
Gorang Manis – Less Sweet (Malays like sugar in their hot drinks, probably more than you are used to)
Te – Tea
Kopi Ping – Iced Coffee
Bir – Beer
ABC Special – A desert or snack type food usually consisting of jelly cubes, ice cream, mung beans and fruit, Try it if you see it on a menu

There isn’t too many words above but when it comes to food that’s about as much as I know. Everything else is just point at the menu and try your luck!

One more word that is not food related, and may not even be Malay (possibly Cadasan) is Aramati — It means ‘I FEEL GOOD!’

Bon Appetite!

P.S. Go visit Labuan, it is a small tax free island off KK. VB is cheaper there than it is in Australia! (VB is an Australian brand of beer)

New Tips How To Save On Airline Tickets http://balashiha.su/?p=6494 http://balashiha.su/?p=6494#respond Sun, 30 Oct 2011 20:11:10 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=6494 New Tips How To Save On Airline Tickets

You have probably read loads of articles concerning cheap flights and airfare deals. However there is always something new that you can learn! These tips are the most basic but still I hope you will find them interesting and useful.
Many people try to save in one quite uncomfortable way – they take their flight in the early morning . This is one of the very simple way how to save. Night and early morning flights are always cheaper so why do you hesitate to take them?
When you book a package – cheap flights with the accommodation at the same time – you can save by buying your package at the last minute sales – as the date of your departure is getting closer the unsold packages are getting cheaper. This can allow you buy the package at the same price (or sometimes even cheaper) than the airline tickets.
There are many traditional and low cost airlines that provides student airfare sales or senior discount. Airfare could be much more cheaper with them. If you are young you can get student low fare flight – and you don’t have to be student. Usually, it is enough when you buy airline tickets for ages 18-22. On the other hand, if you are a senior you can enjoy flying and discovering the parts of the world that you haven’t visited yet. Some airlines offers special senior discount booklets (e.g. there are 4 one way tickets in one booklet) and some offers e.g. 10% discount of your flight.
But watch out! There is a catch (as always). There are not so many airlines offering student or senior discounts – moreover if you look for airfare deals you can find even cheaper tickets. So always try to find the best alternative.
Another problem is connected with so-called “free” airline tickets. Sometimes you can buy tickets very cheaply thanks to airlines’ sales. But always try to find as many pieces of information as possible. If the website says that it is for free – you should count that you will have to pay fees and taxes that could be quite high actually. The very best fares are usually available only for several days and they are gone in a while.
What you can do not to miss any airfare deal or sale for your favourite route? You can spend hours online finding the best and the cheapest airfares or you can sign up at some website which sends email airfare alerts – such as MyAirDeals.com. You don’t have to waste your time – there are great tools that do the search for you – why not to enjoy it?

The Best Way to Travel on a Budget http://balashiha.su/?p=8361 http://balashiha.su/?p=8361#respond Tue, 09 Aug 2011 12:05:40 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=8361 The Best Way to Travel on a Budget

Well you won’t be traveling to Monaco and staying at a five star resort on a budget, will you? Maybe so!  Mostly, traveling on a budget means finding the cheapest price for the experience you want.

When traveling on a budget it’s best to keep in mind the following points:

1. Travel in the off-peak seasons. You can save up to as much as fifty per cent off air flights and accommodation costs if you plan to travel in low season times.

2. Stay away from popular tourist spots (unless they are on your ‘must-see’ list). If you can go off the beaten track with your destinations, things can be cheaper to see and do and your cultural experiences will be richer.

3. Try camping. Not only is it the cheapest form of accommodation it’s a great way to get up close and personal to nature. It’s the best way to see National Parks and Heritage listed areas.

4. Look for special travel offers (or packages). But make sure you check everything that they include – and don’t include.

5. Invest in a travel pass where you are able. Most developed countries have a rail or bus transport system where you can obtain day, week or monthly passes that will get you around cheaply.

6. Get a work permit if you aim to gain employment while traveling overseas. Working can help subsidize places that aren’t so cheap, such as Europe and Australia.

7. Look for good exchange rates on the dollar. This may help you decide which country to travel to.

8. Think about shortening your visit to destinations that are expensive and increasing your length of stay in cheaper places.

9. Where possible use your credit card. The exchange rate is better.

10. When staying in a hotel, avoid paying for ‘extras’. Don’t touch anything from the honor bar. Don’t watch the in-house movies and don’t use the hotel phone. And try not to use room service too much!

On the world scene there are some great places to travel on a budget for under thirty dollars a day. In Asia you can try India, Laos, China, Cambodia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Thailand, Sumatra and Burma. In Central and South America you can visit El Salvador, Bolivia and Ecuador. If you are after a budget experience in the Pacific, try Fiji or New Zealand. Over in Africa there are some great budget destinations such as Kenya, Egypt, Morocco, Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Ghana. Don’t forget the Middle East where places like Iran, Syria and Turkey provide excellent value for money and wonderful experiences for the budget traveler.

There is no ‘best place’ to travel on a budget. Just be prepared to look around, avoid the pitfalls of unwanted costs in package deals or hotel bookings. If you want to travel and your budget doesn’t meet your expectations, be flexible and see if there is somewhere cheaper you might like to experience. You could be pleasantly surprised with your stay in India or Iran, when you thought you wanted to go to Tahiti.

Money Saving While on Holiday http://balashiha.su/?p=6304 http://balashiha.su/?p=6304#respond Sat, 30 Jul 2011 04:13:50 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=6304 Money Saving While on Holiday

As a child, I used to holiday in self catering accommodation with my parents. We’d hire a caravan for a week on one of those holiday parks. Check out http://www.travelglobal.co.uk/Self-Catering-Articles.php

I used to enjoy the environment as there was a pool and slot machines nearby, not to mention the beach and a small harbour where I went fishing.  They used to be fantastic holidays!

One of the things I remember is my parents cooking dinner. It was like home from home and I enjoyed it. I don’t think any child really enjoys eating out in restaurants like an adult does and anyway, the facilities you find these days for children, didn’t really exist in those days. I always deem myself lucky for those happy days. I would certainly recommend self catering for families.

We used to have a large breakfast in our self catering accommodation, then at lunch time, we would have something very light. For dinner, we would either eat out or have dinner where we were staying. As an adult now, I have done the same, and it works out quite a money saver. Of course, I didn’t have a large breakfast if I was going swimming in the morning!

To save money when I’m on holiday now, I usually eat in pubs as they tend to offer the best value for food. Without a shadow of doubt, eating out is the bulk of your spending on holidays, and this can be controlled quite easily without affecting your enjoyment.

Getting Around In Bangkok http://balashiha.su/?p=3923 http://balashiha.su/?p=3923#respond Tue, 26 Jul 2011 11:52:29 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=3923 Getting Around In Bangkok

If you come to visit Bangkok for the first time, one of the first things you will notice is the busy streets and the traffic. The city is very different from other cities in Europe. Don’t get your holiday ruined by hours of waiting in traffic! Reading this article will take approximately 5 minutes, and those five minutes can save you endless hours of waiting.

The busiest part of Bangkok is right in the middle. Around the edges of the city, the streets are a bit more calm. When travelling anywhere around Bangkok, you should always use as much public transport as possible. Trains are better than taxis because they don’t get stuck in traffic.

The best method of getting from A to B is by using the BTS Skytrain. As the name suggests, it’s higher up than the roads. The Skytrain is connected to most of the shopping centers, so it’s a perfect choice of transport for a shopping tour. Once you get there, you will have to buy a ticket; there are one way tickets available and also a day ticket, which you can use as much as you want in a day.

Another option is to get a ‘Smartpass’; this is a credit-card sized plastic card which you refill with money and then just swipe it on a sensor at the entrance gate. This is the best option if you decide to stay for quite a while. Another form of transport in the MRT, which is a subway line. This also connects to popular places like shopping malls.

The BTS station connects with the MRT at three different stations, so it is easy to just jump out of the BTS and head a few floors down, to the subway. The ticket system in the MRT is very similar to the one in the Skytrain. There are also tickets available which work for both the subway and the raised train. To get to places which are not connected to either of the train systems, you will need to take road transport.

Taxi is a good choice, but can be slow because of traffic. An alternative would be a motorbike taxi as they can squeeze through traffic easily. The downside of the motorbike taxi is that it can be quite dangerous on the busy roads of Bangkok, Thailand. And if the trip is not too short, walking is also an alternative. Have a safe trip and a great holiday!!
