With a population in excess of 7,700,000 London holds few secrets. One spot, however, which has managed to remain secluded in the face of growing urban life – the population of Greater London grew by eight per cent between 1997 and 2007 – is the Watts Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice, in Postman’s Park.
Although the city boasts a number of high profile monuments and memorials, chronicling or remembering those who perished through war or tragedy or setting in stone the recognition of worthy historical events, many, such as Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square, pay tribute only to one person or one event.
Watts Memorial in Postman’s Park, conversely, offers visitors a spot of seclusion, serenity and sentiment in the heart of London’s busy Barbican district. Here, hidden from the bustle of nearby St Paul’s Cathedral and Canon Street, visitors will find an unassuming public park, dedicated to the lives of those lost in the heroic act of self-sacrifice.
Located near St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and between King Edward Street, Little Britain and Angel Street, Watts Memorial is situated on the convergence of graveyards from three local churches – St Botolph’s Aldersgate, Christ Church Greyfriars and St Leonard – ground that has been an ecclesiastical site for roughly 1000 years.
The idea for the Memorial was first conceived by Victorian artist and philanthropist George Fredrick Watts in 1887, during which year he wrote to the Times newspaper, suggesting a memorial project to mark the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. His concept was to create a site dedicated to the memory of civilians who had heroically given their lives in an attempt to save others.
Watts, a renowned radical who had twice turned down a Baronetcy, was outspoken of his contempt for the wealthy upper classes. His memorial, instead, would honour the hard working, living poor of urban London. He had designs on like parks throughout England, but the site in London is the only one to have been brought to life.
Watts Memorial might never have been, however, as his pleas to the Times fell on deaf ears. Undeterred, he financed the project personally and designed a 50ft outdoor gallery, decorated with plaques in tribute to the brave lives of ordinary human beings.
Were it not for the tranquillity of the park itself, sided almost totally by brick buildings, with the rear of Botolph’s to the north east corner of the park, and populated by leafy gardens, the plaques themselves would provide plenty interest. Their intricate designs typify the Art Nouveau style popular with the Victorian era. Initially to be crafted by designer William De Morgan, Watts commissioned Doulton of Lambeth to cast the final plaques.
During his lifetime, Watts positioned 13 tiles, his wife, following his death, had 34 further tablets made and posted. The plaques commemorate the deaths of young and old through fire, drowning or other misdemeanour, such as Joseph Andrew Ford and John Clinton.
Recipient of one of the park’s tablets is Alice Ayers, whose name may seem somewhat familiar. In Patrick Marber’s Closer, the character of his stripper takes her name from the park, played in Mike Nicols’ cinematic adaptation by Natalie Portman.
While the park’s title remembers its creator, its common name – Postman’s Park – is in honour of its popularity with the staff at the long since gone nearby General Post Office; workers from which too, used to enjoy a quiet lunch in the park.
The tales of those remembered in Postman’s Park are a popular draw for well-informed tourists, but remain hidden to many Londoners, oblivious to its existence. With so many flights to London bringing tourists to the capital daily, you’ll be surprised to find this tranquil spot of calm, which is a great start for further sightseeing in the city centre.

Costa Rica Family Adventure, Honeymoon, Vacation Packages, Custom Trips, Tour and Transportation Services http://balashiha.su/?p=2444 http://balashiha.su/?p=2444#respond Tue, 04 Jan 2011 15:54:34 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=2444 Costa Rica Family Adventure, Honeymoon, Vacation Packages, Custom Trips, Tour and Transportation Services

Having Visited Costa Rica, I have compiled a list of the best locations to
visit. This list is by no means comprehensive or complete, it is just a checklist
of all the places I would visit when I go to Costa Rica.
Monteverde Cloud Forest
Most famous for being associated with the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve,
the tiny community of Monteverde is a small village located near the
entrance of the cloud forest. Monteverde was founded by the Quaker community
that migrated from North America to Costa Rica in the 1950’s. In town, which
is actually Santa Elena, you’ll find banks, drug store, a local hospital,
book store, gas station, ATM machine, police station, post office,
supermarkets, internet cafes, restaurants
As the weather here is quite chilly and misty, due to the village being high
up in the Tilaran Mountain Range, you should bring some thick clothes and a
light jacket to stay warm. When here, do remember to try out the delicious
local cheeses, which are a treat to eat. If you are a bird watcher, this
village offers some lovely bird watching opportunities, even though you are
not in the cloud forest itself. However, if you prefer to do the more
touristy thing, visit the local craft centers, the women’s co-op center, the
butterfly garden and the Hummingbird Gallery in town.
Dominical Beach
Located on Costa Rica’s amazingly beautiful Central Pacific coastline, the
small village of Dominical is a surfer’s paradise where waves can reach over
10 feet high, a place rich in island biodiversity and amazing underwater
flora and fauna. It is the perfect combination between the extensive golden
coasts full of scenic beaches & luscious mountains.
Dominical is a 4 km long beach strip, with a few hotels, lodges, resorts and
restaurants in the area. While swimming here is near impossible with the
strong swells and rip tides, one can kayak off the coast or enjoy some
diving or snorkeling opportunities in the area. Horseback tours can also be
arranged to the nearby Nauyaca Waterfalls, or one can visit the Marino
Ballena National Park, which is home to a number of marine mammals like
turtles and whales that come here seasonally to mate and nest. If you like,
you can take a short day trip to the lovely Ca?o Island just off the coast.
This island is considered one of the best adventure diving spots in the
world and is home to an impressive array of underwater marine life.
Tortuguero
Tortuguero National Park is one of Costa Rica’s most biologically diverse
wildlife areas. Featuring one of the most verdant landscapes in the country,
the 26,156 hectare park was created with the main purpose of protecting the
green sea turtle nesting area. Tortuguero owes its very wet tropical forest
to the 5000 to 6000 millimeters of rain it receives per year. These climatic
conditions are favorable to more than 400 tree species, around 2200 species
of other plants and more than 400 birds, 60 amphibian and 30 fresh water
fish species, as well as several endangered animals including tapirs,
monkeys, ocelots, jaguars, manatees and sloths. Tortuguero is characterized
by beautifully scenic canals, lagoons and rivers that may be toured by boat,
canoe or kayak. In addition to the green turtle, three other sea turtle
species nest on the park’s beaches.
Arenal Volcano
The Arenal Volcano area is one of Costa Rica’s top attractions. Only 3 hours
away from San Jos?, in the town of La Fortuna, stands a majestic 1,633m
volcano, known to be one of the most active in the world. Despite its
constant activity, the volcano is very safe to visit as long as you stay
within the safety perimeter. In this area take advantage of the pristine
natural surroundings! Go fishing, horseback riding; take a canopy tour,
rafting or experience a tremendous canyon expedition. Whatever you decide,
be sure to visit the relaxing hot springs in the area, the most famous being
Tabacon and Baldi.
La Fortuna and Surroundings
Often simply referred to as La Fortuna, the town of La Fortuna de San Carlos
is the gateway to the magnificent Arenal Volcano. A charming and quiet town,
La Fortuna is easily accessible from the capital city San Jose, and offers
some panoramic views of the spectacular Arenal, Costa’s Rica’s most active
volcano. Sitting around 10 kilometers away from town and regularly spewing
smoke and ash for some time now, the Volcan Arenal is the country’s top
rated tourist attraction and is indeed a sight to behold.
Over the last few years in particular, La Fortuna has become quite a
bustling town. However, there are plenty of accommodations, hotels and
resorts here to suit every budget. A must try when in La Fortuna are the
amazing resort spas surrounding the volcano. On a clear day you can watch
the volcano erupt and if you wait for nightfall, the Arenal puts on a
brilliant show with bright red rocks tumbling down its sides.
Beside the volcano, this town has other great tourist attractions like the
La Catarata de la Fortuna, Tabacon Hot Springs, white water rafting, hiking
excursions, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, canopy tours and
Ca?o Negro Boat Tours are just some of the many activities that one can
enjoy while you are here.
Malpais
Malpais is situated on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica on the southern tip
of the Nicoya Peninsula.
Also known as the Hawaii of Latin America, there are several beaches to
swim, dive or snorkel though it’s main attraction is it’s unique conditions
for surfing and it’s pristine subtropical nature. Horseback riding,
sportfishing, canopy tours, scuba, and nature tours make up some of the
other popular activities nearby. Malpais is a community unlike any other in
Costa Rica with a strong surf culture and a the laid-back atmosphere that
maintains the type of earthy tourism that made Costa Rica famous.
MalPais boasts a great selection of places to stay and eat from camping on
the beach to luxurious resorts and a wide range of activities. Without a
doubt it’s a very attractive place to relax and enjoy the golden rays of the
Pacific sunset.
Turrialba Valley
With some stunning views of Costa Rica’s rural countryside, Turrialba is a
charming little town in the lush and beautiful Central Valley in Cartago
province. Famous for being a white water rafting hotspot and base camp, this
town lies 53 km east of the capital city San Jos? and is an excellent place
to tour the pre-Columbian ruins at Guayabo National Monument, or the rarely
visited but lovely Parque Nacional Volcan Turrialba. A quiet town, Turrialba
with its charming street corners and gorgeous surrounding sceneries is among
the few places in Costa Rica with direct access to a volcano’s crater. From
the summit of the volcano, you can on a clear day, see the Irazu, Po?s and
Barva volcanoes in the distance Botanists and gardeners will want to pay a
visit to the Center for Agronomy Research and Development (CATIE), which is
located 5km (3 miles) southeast of Turrialba on the road to Siquirres. This
center is one of the world’s foremost facilities for research into tropical
agriculture.

Food And Culture Tips To Enjoy Travel To Morocco http://balashiha.su/?p=3671 http://balashiha.su/?p=3671#respond Sat, 25 Dec 2010 10:24:47 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=3671 Food And Culture Tips To Enjoy Travel To Morocco

What I love most about travelling is the first hand knowledge of other cultures. There is something unique about discovering the traditions, the way of life, the arts & crafts and especially the food. All Countries are fascinating in their own way; however there are places in the world that are richer than others in a way of traditions and history. Morocco is one of them. Not only Morocco sprouts history from every corner with its beautiful architecture and the Medina, which has kept the unspoilt status of old city and seems to guard its hidden secrets, but the traditions are just as evident in everyday life. You just need to visit one of the famous Moroccan markets to see the abundance of their arts and crafts, and if you are lucky enough you might even barter yourself a deal and take home one of the renowned Moroccan rugs or a precious handmade piece of silver jewellery.

Food lovers who travel to Morocco will be able to please their taste buds during their visit to Morocco where traditional food is well known for its succulent Tajine and couscous dishes. Moroccan food is based on meat, usually lamb or chicken, vegetables, couscous and a large selection of bread. Each recipe tends to carry very strong flavours, and will surely provide a wonderful gastronomic experience.

Soups are very popular and often a meal starts with a rich and spicy pulse soup called the Harira. As well as a first course pulse soups are often served for breakfast at cafes. Just like Harira, Bisara is a popular breakfast dish, a rich chickpea soup with fresh olive oil poured over the top. Many cafes specialize in soups and they are usually recognized by the piles of cups on the counter.

The other succulent Moroccan dish is the famous Tajine, which takes its name from the dish – a heavy ceramic covered dish – rather than the food itself. Classic Tajines are usually made with a generous portion of meat in the middle of the dish surrounded by vegetables and fruit. The dish is central to the success of a good Tajine that needs to slow-cook with the lid on. Lamb Tajines are usually cooked with almonds and prunes, while chicken Tajines are made with green olives and lemon. If you happen to be invited for a meal in someone’s house, the Tajine will be in the middle of the table and the custom is to eat the vegetables in front of you accepting the pieces of meat the host offers you.

Couscous is the most renowned Moroccan dish, coarse semolina steamed with vegetables and spices served with lamb or chicken. Traditionally couscous is not a dish you would find at restaurants, but it is the food the locals eat on special days and the best couscous you could have is at a Moroccan household. If you wish to eat it at the restaurant remember to order it a few hours before you go.

Dates, yoghurt, fresh cheese and olives are popular snacks accompanied with the many types of bread available. Mint tea is the national drink and is often offered in sign of friendship and during negotiation over price in shops.

Why is Orlando Florida a great place http://balashiha.su/?p=10829 http://balashiha.su/?p=10829#respond Sat, 04 Sep 2010 07:23:32 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=10829 Why is Orlando Florida a great place?

Why is Orlando Florida a great place?

There are many answers to that question; Orlando is one of those special places that you simply must go to at some point in your life, why I hear you say? the answer is simple it is full of unique attractions. There is everything from watching spectacular killer whales perform mind boggling maneuvers with their human trainers to experiencing the awesome site of Dinosaurs feeding in a tropical forest landscape. It is one of those very special places in the World, where there is something to do for everyone, it is simply awesome.

Theme parks

These are the main tourist attraction in Orlando Florida, they are simply superb, and I cannot think of any reason why you shouldn’t make them your first port of call. There is something to do for every member of your family, which must be why they are so popular.

People say that Walt Disney World especially the Magic Kingdom is just for children, how wrong they can be, Lynn and I have sat next to people in their 70’s who absolutely love the theme park’s, its not unique to see an octogenarian getting a cuddle from Mickey Mouse.

Epcot is thought provoking for us adults, and a constant source of education, fun, and entertainment for children. Where else could you see modern crop propagation along side a Pirate battle taking place on the high sea in the Caribbean?

Disney Animal Kingdom is very special, you will be amazed at the mix of attractions from complex animatronics to watching wild animals in a natural environment, and you actually feel as if you are on an African Safari.

Disney Hollywood studios brings the frill and excitement of the big screen right to you, experience the death defying stunts and carefully crafted movie rides, you can even be part of a gangster street fight played out by highly realistic automatons, meet  the Hollywood greats such as James Cagney and John Wayne.

What’s there to do when you’re not in the Parks… or its way after dark? Day or night at Downtown-Disney area, choose from dining with dinosaurs to a distinctly Disney shopping extravaganza to catching incredible live music and shows!

How many Disney-Characters can you spot? Make sure you take your autograph book and a camera, you never know who you will come across, and Brer Fox can be seen near Splash Mountain, in the Magic Kingdom!

Swim With Dolphins

Whilst you are on your Orlando-Florida-Holidays, it would be silly not to take a swim with the dolphins at somewhere like Discovery Cove. I did this not too long ago and it is something that I know I will never forget, it was a truly great experience. Many other holiday resorts have water parks for your entertainment, they attract many people every year and Orlando Florida is no exception, Blizzard Beach and Typhoon lagoon are Walt-Disney properties, Aquatica is located just across the road from Sea world.

Universal Studios, Wow is the best adjective to describe this source of entertainment, meet Spider Man and that terrifying Great White Shark portrayed in Jaws, and feel the fear as he rises out of the water.

Orlando Florida Holiday’s where else could you ride the Sheikra, The very first dive coaster in North America – and it’s a good one! 200 feet up, and then straight back down again at up to 70mph… with a 90 degree drop.

Sky above, earth below and nothing but a massive thrill in between? Busch Gardens

Planning Orlando Florida Holidays? Orlando offers a wide range of accommodation from

Cheap Hotels on International Drive to themed Disney properties such as Disney-All-Star-Movie resort, some of the best Hotels include the Caribbean Beach Resort right in the heart of the magic; remember staying at a Disney Resort offers complimentary transport to and from Disney Theme parks.

Discover Cambrils in Costa Dorada http://balashiha.su/?p=2689 http://balashiha.su/?p=2689#respond Sun, 29 Aug 2010 08:25:12 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=2689 Discover Cambrils in Costa Dorada

A little further south along the Costa Dorada from Salou, is the holiday town of Cambrils. It is apparent that, although Cambrils welcomes visitors and provides for them, it has never lost its original character as a fishing town. this is also a reason why Costa Dorada hotels and Costa Dorada apartments are still an insider’s tip.

Like all resorts on this stretch of Spanish coastline, Cambrils offers loads of glorious beaches. The sand is golden, the sea is warm and shallow; it is quite safe for youngsters of all abilities.

The sea also provides a major venue for water sports, which are very well catered for here. Visitors can try windsurfing, jet skis, sailing, diving, pedallos or hire a boat and sail along the coast. Sailing and windsurfing are particularly good as the wind is very favourable.

Off the beach, there are an equal number of facilities to be active. There are three excellent golf courses within easy reach, plus a municipal pitch and putt for all to enjoy. The local sports centres provide activities for youngsters in and out of the swimming pools.

To go further a field, hire a horse and go trekking in the nearby countryside. Or ride a bicycle and explore the delta of the river Ebro, with its unusual wildlife and rare plants.

For those who enjoy exploring on foot, the town of Cambrils is a must. The winding, narrow streets, flanked by traditional buildings with flower decorated balconies, are a joy. There are many original old buildings and a good enough selection of churches, castles, monuments, municipal buildings and towers to satisfy anyone.

Cambrils’ real claim to fame on the Costa Dorada, however, is its cuisine. It is regarded as the gastronomic capital of the coast. As well as serving many traditional Catalan dishes, there is a custom of modern and original cooking, but still based on the excellent local produce.

Fish and seafood play a major part in the cuisine of the town, as they are landed daily at the fish quay and sent straight to the restaurants from the fish markets. These are matched by the superb olive oil produced in the region, which is some of the best in Spain.

For those whose holiday is incomplete without shopping, Cambrils offers a wide variety of outlets. Based mainly in the old town and the port quarter, there is large selection of boutiques, tourist souvenir shops, local crafts and shops for everyday needs. To complete the shopping, one must wander round the two street markets, held each week in the port and the old town. Buy locally produced items to eat back at home and remind oneself of Cambrils.

If travelling to London and visiting some Markets to get a few bargains is your idea of good fun I have just the perfect guide for you. Having lived here most of my adult life and worked in Camden Market for over five years and in Greenwich Market for well over fifteen years I had a good opportunity to find out about every aspect of the markets. But in this article I will concentrate on the fun parts mostly.

Greenwich Market is one of the most unique market place you can visit as cheap imports are not allowed in, general quality of the merchandise is above average. Best time to visit is the weekends.

Greenwich Antique Market is the next stop and if the weather is good you wouldn’t want to leave. Lots of stalls, lots of stuff to look and search through, open weekends only.

Camden Market, This is a tricky place to go to and keep your wallet safe. Very busy, lots of action literally thousands of stalls and crammed with tens of thousands of people every weekend. Do not rely on Camden Town Tube station and use Chalk Farm instead.

Stables Market is next to Camden and Camden Lock Market, trendy clothing and antiques are the most sought after goods here; again weekends only and use Chalk Farm Tube if you can.

Spitalfields Market is open every day but busier on the weekends. At the heart of city of London and the East End you can find from art to organic food, antiques and hand crafts.

Portobello Road, well we have all seen this place in the film Notting Hill, you will not bump in to Julia or Hugh but none the less still full of interesting characters and stalls. From fruit and veg to antiques are sold and anything in between is not missed either. Have fun.

Roman Road Market is a typical British street market with quite a good range of fresh flowers and plants on offer. Usual fruit and vegetable stalls along with clothing and household items are on mass.

All the above places have more cafes and restaurants then I can possibly list or review, however it is quite unlucky to find one that is below average. So have fun and let me have your views too.
