Sanibel And Captiva Are Sister Islands With Distinct Differences http://balashiha.su/?p=7452 http://balashiha.su/?p=7452#respond Sun, 24 Jul 2011 17:20:08 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=7452 Sanibel And Captiva Are Sister Islands With Distinct Differences

It’s an amazing fact of life that two small barrier islands in such proximity can have their own distinct identity. But then again, even “identical” twins can be very different so perhaps it is not so amazing that Sanibel Island and Captiva Island, only minutes from one another, can be compared on their differences.
And people coming to the area should certainly take advantage of the two islands as they both offer something of value.
Sanibel is the larger of the two islands and home to the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge.
Five thousand acres of Sanibel Island are preserved lands. The Refuge was named for J. Norwood Darling, a man who was a Pulitzer prize winning political cartoonist and who used his art to support conservation. For many years, Darling had a winter home in Florida on Captiva Island but it was Sanibel that had the land that was acquired for the Refuge. The Refuge is probably the most distinguishing characteristic of Sanibel Island, as well as its saving grace in the face of any threat of development.
Of course one could stay on Captiva and bike or drive over to the wildlife refuge, but there is something particularly immediate and attractive in staying on Sanibel within an easy walk to the Refuge.
Both Sanibel and Captiva have some great restaurants, but Captiva has a greater feeling of village center. It’s not a large center, but it is a definable geo area, quaint and charming, as opposed to Sanibel where the stores and restaurants are scattered through out the island.
Sanibel offers a greater variety of accommodations and a greater spread in price range. So families, couples or singles seeking lodging will find both less expensive options and more variety in their housing alternatives on Sanibel.
There are more shops and a greater diversity of shops on Sanibel and both of the larger grocery stores, Jerry’s and Bailey’s, are on Sanibel. One charm for Captiva, however, is the easy access to boating adventures.
So before choosing your island, maybe it’s worth weighing the pros and cons of each. Either way, you’ll be happy.

The story of Seven Summits http://balashiha.su/?p=8625 http://balashiha.su/?p=8625#respond Wed, 06 Apr 2011 18:52:23 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=8625 The story of Seven Summits

Every history has got a story. Of course stories are the instruments that narrate history. Likewise the history behind the origin of seven summits has also got several stories to speak up. This article will summarize those stories and reveals you with the real reasons for naming these mountains so.
Before to enter with the matter one should have a clear idea about the members of the Seven summits. Well the Seven summits really denotes the seven highest peaks each one representing one of the seven continents in the world. We all knew that the seven continents that are existing right now can be listed out in the descending order on basis of their area as: ASIA, AFRICA, NORTH AMERICA, SOUT AMERICA, ANTARCTICA, EUROPE and AUSTRALIA
Belonging to any one of the continents listed above, Seven summits can be listed as:
– Aconcagua
– Carstensz Pyramid
– Kilimanjaro
– Elbrus
– Denali
– Vinson
– Mount Everest
Starting with Aconcagua which represents the continent South America, the story of it seems to be quite confusing as records say there are three reasons behind it’s naming. On linguistic grounds it is believed that the name of this peak is derived from “Quechuan” language which is the combination of two words “Ackhon Cahuak” and “Anco Cahuac”. The words are not of fancy and they really mean “Sentinel of stone” and “White Sentinel”. Mean while the ancient people of Andes called the “Mapuches”, named as “Aconca- Hue” which means “Comes from the other side”.
Carstensz Pyramid which is probably now known as Puncak Jaya, this mountain is located on the island of New Guinea and stands as the highest peak in Indonesia. This mountain was named Carstensz Pyramid by a Dutch explorer Jan Carstensz in the year 1623 who, when he returned to Europe, was almost punished for claiming that there was a mountain near the equator with snow on it. The present name of the mountain is Puncak Jaya which came about in the 1960s when Indonesia took over control. The name was first changed to Puncak Soekarno after the president of Indonesia, but was later changed to Puncak Jaya, Jaya meaning ‘victorious’ or ‘glorious’.
In the North East Tanzania lies the Mount Kilimanjaro which is the highest free-standing mountain in the world. The exact meaning of the word Kilimanjaro is unknown as it is thought to be a mixture of the Swahili and Kichagga languages.
Elbrus which represents the continent of Europe has the pride to be the highest peak of Europe. The mere translation of Elbrus in the Arabic language is “Surprise; surprise; White mountain”.
The Denali range is the highest peak of North America which is exactly located in Alaska. The name is discovered by the natives of Alaska called the “Athabaskans” which means “The Great one”.
The Vinson range is located in the freezing Antarctica. It is officially given this name by the US advisory committee on Arctic names due to great financial support of the congressman Carl Vinson.
The Everest needs no introductions as we all know it seems to be one of nature’s wonders. Many interesting stories swirl around when we put ourselves in discovering the origin of it’s name. of all the valuable fact is that this highest range acquires it’s name from “Colonel George Everest” who was the chief of the surveyor who actually measured the real height of this peak to this world.

Bridge Over the River Kwai (or Death Railway Trip) http://balashiha.su/?p=1512 http://balashiha.su/?p=1512#respond Fri, 18 Feb 2011 08:35:27 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=1512 Bridge Over the River Kwai (or Death Railway Trip)

The Kwai River Bridge was made famous by the 1960s movie about a bamboo bridge being built by British Soldiers in Burma during World War II. This movie was mostly fiction, the bridge is of concrete/metal construction and it is actually located in Thailand. Thailand Tourism authority offers a great service of train tours. These are low cost trips that you can take that range from day trips to long weekends to various scenic parts of Thailand. Most of the trips begin and end in the Hua Laphong Rail Station, the main rail hub for passengers for the entire country. Pictures of this station are shown above. The station is clean and organized, but beware, it is also VERY busy. As a side note: Thailand uses their rail and bus system as their major artery moving people and products throughout their borders.
The tour that I choose was a day trip that took me almost to the Thai border with Myanmar, ending in the Soiyak Water Falls but making stops in Phra Pathom Chedi, Bridge over the Rive Kwai, the “Death Railway”, and the Kanchanabury WWII Cemetery. I will describe each of these stops in detail below. The trip was a full day, starting at 7 am and not returning to Hua Laphong Station until after dark, around 7 pm. The train was un-air-conditioned but was comfortable, at least while we were moving.
Phra Pathom Chedi
Our first stop was at the temple called Phra Pathom Chedi , The Temple main feature was a huge pagoda (see the pictures below. The stop was just long enough to walk from the train station to the Temple without too much rush. To get to the temple we walk through a city market area where you can get anything from a quick snack to a glass of ice coffee.
Bridge over the River Kwai and the “Death Railway
The Bridge was made famous by a 1960’s film of the same name. The film, however was in fact fiction based loosely on the events surrounding this bridge. I will not go into detail of the differences between the film and this bridge but will let that up to you. Briefly, the bridge is located in Thailand, not Burma but many people (mostly British soldiers) did give their lives building this bridge for the Japanese during World War II. This is why this railway is known as the “Death Railway” in Thailand. The rail line leading from the Kwai River Bridge to the Soiyak Water Falls appears treacherous but is well maintained and safe for travel. The railway follows the river and often has sheer cliffs overlooking the river and can be quite scenic. However, these conditions lead to many deaths during WWII.
Kanchanaburi WWII Cemetery
The WWII Cemetery in Kanchanaburi is filled with the bodies of the people who gave their lives constructing the Kwai Bridge for the Japanese Army. This stop is quite sobering knowing these men gave their lives building the rail line that was we were just on.
Soiyak Water Falls
The Soiyak Water Fall is the final stop of this trip and it is quite refreshing. The waterfall is augmented in areas with concrete and being an geologist is could tell immediately that it wasn’t natural. The industrious Thai People have taken and natural water supply and made is a tourist stop. The surrounding area is a natural area and protected from development, which is good. There are hiking trails leading to the water falls source; a small stream filled with small fish and is icy cold. Also along the trail is a few caves to explore. The Thai People find these areas sacred, as evidenced by the presence of sacred images located in the caves. The trail are quite interesting, having many native plants and animals to observe along the way.
At the very end of the Railway sits an historic train, once used by the Japanese during the construction of the railway. The plaque commemorating the train and the people who died in its construction gave the trip some meaning for me.
We returned to the Hua Laphong Rail Station rather late and I was quite tired, but the trip was worthwhile and I would recommend this trip to anyone interested in learning some about historical Thailand. For more interesting travel ideas please visit my website: www.apllc-connect.com/travel/.

Mt Huang – the Best of All Mountains in China http://balashiha.su/?p=6362 http://balashiha.su/?p=6362#respond Fri, 18 Feb 2011 00:50:34 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=6362 Mt Huang – the Best of All Mountains in China

Mt. Huang in East China Anhui province is celebrated for having all the features of mountain scenery and known as the No. 1 Mountain under heaven. Its unique scenery of jagged peaks and twisted pines are often depicted in traditional Chinese paintings. Rocks, mist, trees, and waterfalls make it an unforgettable place. Xu XiaKe, a noted Chinese geologist and traveler in Ming Dynasty, praised Mt. Huang as the best of all mountains.

With many peaks and spectacular scenery, Mt. Huang is listed by UNESCO as a world culture and natural heritage area. There are over 400 scenic spots, making Mt. Huang one of the most spectacular areas in China.

It is characterized by the four wonders, namely, odd-shaped pines, grotesque rock formation, seas of clouds and crystal-clear hot springs. The best way to enjoy the mountain is hiking. The most popular route is to ascend via the Easter steps, and descend via the Western steps. It was about a 10-hour hike, if completed in one day and only recommended for those in excellent health.

Hiking here will include visits to unique attractions below:

Odd-shaped pines are the queer trees that exude an exquisite beauty. You will be amazed by their vitality and strength. Another feature of Mt. Huang pines is that many trees grow branches on one side only.

The Grotesque Rocks are extraordinary. Tiandu Feng (Celestial Capital Peak), Bright Top and Lianhua Feng (Lotus Flower Peak), all rise above 1,800 meters (5,600 feet). These rocks are so unusual that visitors will be struck not only by their beauty but also by the many images they represent.

The Cloud Seas seen from the peaks of Mt. Huang are truly mystical. The best time to see the cloud sea is in autumn or in winter. Lucky visitors can witness Mt. Huang spectacular sunrises. Get up early to view Beihai sunrise, you will be amazed to see a sea of low clouds blanketing the valley to the north and “island” peaks hazily reaching for the heavens.

The Hot Springs are constantly at a temperature of 42C. Visitors can have opportunity to take a soothing soak in the warm waters and have a lifetime memories of stunning mountain scenery.

Enjoy the Mt. Huang in different season:

Spring time is from March to May. You will view all flowers blossom, pines to vomit the green, the mountain bird flies and sing.

Summer time is from June to August. You will watch pines, cloud and mist and go to summer resort and has leisure.

Autumn time is from September to November. You will watch the landscapes of green pines, natural stone, red maple, yellow chrysanthemum etc.

Winter time is from December to February. You will watch flowers of ice and snow and fogs pine. In the good weather you can appreciate the strange pines and stones in Yellow Mountain; in cloudy day you can watch a sea of clouds transformation; in rainy days you can find to flow the spring waterfall and in snowy days you can see the jade tree, the breeze hears pines in empty valley.

Usually the whole Mt. Huang needs at least 3 days to go through. The perfect for many was to spend the night in the hotel on the peak.

Here we recommend hiking routes. Take the one you like and explore different elements of the Mt. Huang area:

  • D1: South Gate-bus- Cloud Valley Temple (Yun Gu Si) – Climb the mountain or cable car- White Goose Ridge (Bai E Ling)- Black Tiger Pine (Hei Hu Song)- Beginning-to Peak (Shi Xin Feng)- Black Tiger Pine (Hei Hu Song)- live near the North Sea (Bei Hai hotel or you can live in West Sea Hotel, Pai Yun Lou Hotel or rent tent)

  • D3: East Sea Canyon – lover Valley – Nine-dragon Waterfall (Jiulong Pu) – Renzi Waterfall( Ren Zi Pu) – Baizhang Spring (Bai Zhang Quan) – drift
