The Sacred Hindu Pilgrimage And The World’s Largest Act of Faith – Kumbh Mela in Haridwar 2010 http://balashiha.su/?p=8607 http://balashiha.su/?p=8607#respond Mon, 31 Oct 2011 08:39:57 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=8607 The Sacred Hindu Pilgrimage And The World’s Largest Act of Faith – Kumbh Mela in Haridwar 2010

The Kumbh Mela is one of the most important festivals of the Hindus. This Mela occurs at 4 different places in India; these are Ujjain, Allahabad, Nashik and Haridwar. This actually occurs 4 times in a period of 12 years. It is interesting to note that the, it is the largest human fair in the world. Millions of people including the ‘Naga Sadhus’ visit this mela. In Allahabad, Prayag is the site where the Mela is organized. The 3 holy rivers, Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati merge at Prayag. This is the reason why this place is considered to be extremely sacred by the Hindus.

Hindu pilgrims who come to the Maha Kumbh Mela bathes in the River Ganga. They believe that by doing this, they will be purged out of their sins and attain salvation. People sing devotional songs and also discuss religious topics at the Mela.In Haridwar, the place of the this,is where the River Ganga meets the plains on its descent from the Himalayan ranges. In Ujjain, the mela is organized on the banks of the River Ksipra. In Nashik, the banks of the River Godavari are flooded with pilgrims who come to the Kumbh Mela. Like all other Hindu festivals, it also has a legend associated with it. In fact, the legend dates back to the ages when the earth was just created and man was not even born!

The background of the Kumbh Mela is that during the creation of the earth the Gods suffered from a curse. So, in order to purge out their sins, they were supposed to consume divine nectar called ‘amrit’ by churning the ocean. The demons helped the Gods to procure ‘amrit’ but, they wanted half of it. After the nectar was procured, the Gods ran away with it without giving the demons their legitimate share. This initiated a battle between the two contesting parties. However, the demons managed to escape with the nectar. The Gods pursued them in the sky for 12 days and nights in order to retrieve the pot containing ‘amrit’. During this process, 4 drops of the ‘amrit’ fell on 4 different places on the earth. These places were Ujjain, Allahabad, Nashik and Haridwar.

Since time immemorial, it is believed (by the Hindus) that these places are extremely sacred. Astrologers say that during the 42 days long Kumbh Mela, the holy waters of these rives turn into ‘amrit’. So, anyone who takes holy dip will be relieved of his sins in this life. The Kumbh Mela is a perfect place to see the ‘Naga Babas’ (or the ‘Naga Sadhus’). They remain naked and their long hairs are tied into knots. Their bodies are smeared with ashes and they perform different types of yogic postures and ‘asana’. It is believed that they have positive healing powers. The ‘Naga Babas’ can live only on herbs and are not affected even when the temperature falls below 0 degree Celsius. They dwell in their own world and are completely emancipated from the vices of modern life.

Awesome Boar| Vietnam| Vietnam Travel| Vietnam visa http://balashiha.su/?p=1043 http://balashiha.su/?p=1043#respond Sat, 08 May 2010 10:53:01 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=1043 Awesome Boar| Vietnam| Vietnam Travel| Vietnam visa

In Lang Son Province, which borders China, die people eat roast meat they call che than. Although it is available at restaurants, originally che than is something a family prepares for special guests. Che than must be served not in bowls or dishes but on three layers of leaves, uppermost moc mat, a kind of succulent apricot, next red-pepper, and at  the bottom a grass that grows by a brook. The eating utensil is a eucalyptus twig sharpened and   heated.

The meat does not go directly    into    the mouth but is dipped in three terracotta bowls, the first containing lard prepared with clay, the second red pepper prepared with cassava alcohol and the third salt prepared with wild banana. Che than is served with one-third of a moc mat leaf that has been soaked in the brook, and part of the stalk of the leaf should be used as a toodipick.

According to Mr Nung Sieng, a che than specialist in Bao Lam Village, Cao Loc District, a wild boar of about 20 kg is the most suitable, and it should come from deep in forest or high on a mountain, to be awe-inspiringly powerful.

A ceremony in worship of mountain gods and forest ghosts is held before the boar is gutted. The carcass should be washed with extract of moc mat leaves mixed with clay mud, soaked in vinegar, covered with a layer of grass taken from beside a brook, buried three days and three nights, washed with herbal extract, embalmed with forest spices, stuffed with moc -mat leaves, trussed with wild-apricot twigs and roasted over a fire fuelled with wood of a special tree that has born fruit; salt has been thrown into the fire. When the skin begins to yellow, a sign that the meat is cooked well, water from the brook mixed with cassava alcohol is poured on to it without putting the fire out; smoke must be kept away lest the che than aroma be dispersed and the awe-inspiring power dissipated. The boar is turned over, and lard coming out of it collected and poured back over it when the feast is about to start.

The cooking of che than is carried out only when the host has made sure nobody-is lurking or eavesdropping.

The meat is displayed on a table covered with moc mat leaves and the host says a mantra to change it into che than.

Because che than is in high demand, wild boar, big or small, are becoming scarce and domestic pigs are substituted. Many families break the law and bring    che    than out    for    sale and   restaurants   prepare   it. It is now available over the border,in China.

CHARDHAM YATRA http://balashiha.su/?p=1871 http://balashiha.su/?p=1871#respond Thu, 18 Mar 2010 16:55:20 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=1871 CHARDHAM YATRA

One Expression around which all religions base their preaching. Peace of mind, body and soul. Since time immemorial both man and God have just one prayer – Shanti – for the living and the Departed. The Char Dham, also called the Deo Bhumi – The Adobe of the Gods – presents just the ambience where the Divine & the Sublime coexist.
Once there, the sheer magnificence and the tranquil beauty so immerses you into a world of spirituality that you experience true peace and humility. Nature in all its splendour, at once huge and overwhelming and yet humble in its exquisite beauty – the pilgrimage to the Char Dhams is the experience that will stay with you and beyond.
The Holy Himalayas :
The Himalayas – the world’s most majestic & loftiest mountain chain, is the global heritage of all mankind. The sublime quality of this “Adobe of Snows’ has, since time immemorial, inspired the sages & saints of India and has attracted tourists & pilgrims from world over to its awesome beauty & calm serenity. Uttaranchal abounds in places of sanctity where devotees converge every year to pay obeisance to their Gods braving vagaries of weather & other human travails in Himalaya. Closest to the celestial beings, devotees from all corners of the country have flocked to these Himalayan shrines of Char Dham – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath & Badrinath yatra every year to seek salvation. The arduous trails remain in the ancient sanctuaries of faith for a fulfilling experience. The four dhams receive holy water in the form of four streams – Yamuna (Yamunotri), Bhagirathi (in Gangotri), Mandakini (in Kedarnath) and Alaknanda (in Badrinath)

Badrinath Dham is one of the oldest of Hindu places of worship. On the right bank of the river Alaknanda lies the sacred shrine perched at an altitude of 3133 m above sea level, guarded on either side by the two mountain peaks Nar & Narain with the towering Neelkanth peak providing a splendid back-drop. Also known as the Vishal Badri, the largest among the five Badris, it is revered by all as the apt tribute to Lord Vishnu.
The revered spot was once carpeted with wild berries which gave it the name ‘Badri Van’ meaning ‘forest of berries.’ Built by Adi Shankaracharaya, the philosopher-saint of the 8th century, the temple has been renovated several times due to damage by avalanches and restored in the 19th century by the royal houses of Scindia & Holkar. The main entrance gate is colourful & imposing popularly known as Singhdwar. References to Sri Badrinath have been made in the Vedas & perhaps it was a popular shrine during the Vedic age also. The Skand Purana gives an accvount of the Adiguru consecrating the idol of Lord Badri Vishal in the temple after recovering it from Narad Kund, in a pursuance of a divine call from heaven. The idol is made of black stone similar to granite. So holy is the shrine that it forms one of the four prominent places of Hindu worship. The epic Mahabharat, it is believed, was composed in the Vyas & ganesh caves close by. The Vishnu Ganga which later becomes the Alaknanda flows below the temple. Almost 3 km north of Badrinath, mana is the last Indian village before the Tibetan border. The Vasudhara falls are quite spectacular. On the closing day the residents of Mana offer a choli to the deity to cover the diety all the winter. It is taken off on the opening day & its fibres are distributed amongst the Yatris (pilgrims) as a maha prasadam. Joshimath is the winter deity of Badrinath.
The temple opens every year in the month of April-May & closes for winters in the third week of November. Badrinath’s four subsidiary Badris include Bhavishya Badri, Yogdhyan Badri, Bridha Badri and Adi badri. It is popularly believed that with spread of Buddhism, the Buddhists enshrined the statue of Lord Buddha there and during the Hindu renaissance, the statue of Buddha was later restored by Adi Guru as the idol of Vishnu. This possibly explains the deity sitting in Padmasan posture, typical of Buddha icons. However, also according to Hindu mythology, Buddha was considered to be the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
