The Kumbh Mela is one of the most important festivals of the Hindus. This Mela occurs at 4 different places in India; these are Ujjain, Allahabad, Nashik and Haridwar. This actually occurs 4 times in a period of 12 years. It is interesting to note that the, it is the largest human fair in the world. Millions of people including the ‘Naga Sadhus’ visit this mela. In Allahabad, Prayag is the site where the Mela is organized. The 3 holy rivers, Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati merge at Prayag. This is the reason why this place is considered to be extremely sacred by the Hindus.

Hindu pilgrims who come to the Maha Kumbh Mela bathes in the River Ganga. They believe that by doing this, they will be purged out of their sins and attain salvation. People sing devotional songs and also discuss religious topics at the Mela.In Haridwar, the place of the this,is where the River Ganga meets the plains on its descent from the Himalayan ranges. In Ujjain, the mela is organized on the banks of the River Ksipra. In Nashik, the banks of the River Godavari are flooded with pilgrims who come to the Kumbh Mela. Like all other Hindu festivals, it also has a legend associated with it. In fact, the legend dates back to the ages when the earth was just created and man was not even born!

The background of the Kumbh Mela is that during the creation of the earth the Gods suffered from a curse. So, in order to purge out their sins, they were supposed to consume divine nectar called ‘amrit’ by churning the ocean. The demons helped the Gods to procure ‘amrit’ but, they wanted half of it. After the nectar was procured, the Gods ran away with it without giving the demons their legitimate share. This initiated a battle between the two contesting parties. However, the demons managed to escape with the nectar. The Gods pursued them in the sky for 12 days and nights in order to retrieve the pot containing ‘amrit’. During this process, 4 drops of the ‘amrit’ fell on 4 different places on the earth. These places were Ujjain, Allahabad, Nashik and Haridwar.

Since time immemorial, it is believed (by the Hindus) that these places are extremely sacred. Astrologers say that during the 42 days long Kumbh Mela, the holy waters of these rives turn into ‘amrit’. So, anyone who takes holy dip will be relieved of his sins in this life. The Kumbh Mela is a perfect place to see the ‘Naga Babas’ (or the ‘Naga Sadhus’). They remain naked and their long hairs are tied into knots. Their bodies are smeared with ashes and they perform different types of yogic postures and ‘asana’. It is believed that they have positive healing powers. The ‘Naga Babas’ can live only on herbs and are not affected even when the temperature falls below 0 degree Celsius. They dwell in their own world and are completely emancipated from the vices of modern life.

An Uncommon Travel Tip Too Can Prove To Be Very Useful Under Uncommon Circumstances http://balashiha.su/?p=873 http://balashiha.su/?p=873#respond Sun, 28 Aug 2011 19:15:47 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=873 An Uncommon Travel Tip Too Can Prove To Be Very Useful Under Uncommon Circumstances

When it comes to receiving advice regarding travel you will find that people will mostly talk about flying and airports as well as hotels and budgets as well as choice destinations. However, there is another side to travel that most people are not aware of and for which a few choice travel tips are available. A travel tip need not necessarily always help you save money but it can still prove to be invaluable for people that travel – whether they travel often or casually.

Removing Gum

A simple travel tip is the one related to gum. Not many people are aware that in order to remove gum from your hair or from your garments or from your shoes, the best solution is to use ice cubes that will help in hardening the gum sufficiently to make it easy to break it off. You should also welcome another useful though less well known travel tip which pertains to removing collar stains.

The best way to remove collar stains is to pour some hair shampoo on the stain and to then spread the shampoo to all parts of the collar. Shampoos are effective in removing oils from a person’s hair and will also do the same for skin oil that causes collar stains.

Often, a situation arises when you have to wash your clothes but your hotel does not have its own laundry to help you get the clothes clean. A simple travel tip in this regard is to hang your clothes in the bathroom in which all the lights are switched on. By morning, you will find that your clothes will have dried out completely and will look clean as well.

Sometimes room flies might bug you in your hotel room and you also don’t have bug sprays to get rid of the flies. A simple travel tip in this regard shows you the benefit of using hair sprays instead. On the other hand, in order to freshen up your clothes you can also use laundry detergent which can be applied to places where you sweat a lot such as your underarms and the front of your shirt. Then you can rinse off the detergent and dry your clothes and have them looking fresh and clean once more.

For those people who are neophytes about traveling to foreign countries there are several useful international travel tips that will help ensure smoother travel. Some of the travel tips that you will come across are those that are a bit out of the ordinary and ones that people normally do not think about. However, many times an occasion will arise when these very uncommon travel tips will come in very handy and so are well worth learning about.

Why You’ve Been Wrong About Yacht Charters and Some Tips to Get Started http://balashiha.su/?p=10899 http://balashiha.su/?p=10899#respond Sun, 14 Aug 2011 12:36:37 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=10899 Why You’ve Been Wrong About Yacht Charters and Some Tips to Get Started

Why would anyone want to holiday on a yacht? Noisy, prone to move without permission, expensive. Worse yet, they make you sick. Not quite the dream holiday you’ve paid for with early mornings, cramped commutes and long interminable office hours. But there’s a ‘but’.

You can look good lounging on your hotel terrace, but you can look fabulous arriving by yacht. The question is how to achieve this without a)blowing the bank, b)getting sea-sick, and c) falling off.

First, yachts don’t need to be expensive. Consider how much you’ll otherwise spend on a hotel. Look at the number of berths on a boat and make sure you fill them. Split down the costs and surprise yourself. The numbers in your party and the berths on the boat are the most important factor. On the whole you’ll find the bigger your party the better rate you can get. A recently booked skippered charter out of Athens for a group of 10 on a 65ft sailing yacht, including all the food and drink (maybe not all the drink), all taxes, fuel and annoying extras came in at 71EURO per head. Not bad.

What else? If you don’t have a yachtie member of your party who can drive the boat then you can easily hire a local skipper for around ?100/day. If there’s 6 of you that’s about ?17 per day – not too distressing for a professional tour guide every day and one who’ll take care of the yacht for you.

What about that sick feeling you get as soon as the wind picks up and you’re supposed to be having a ‘good sail’? Well, there are places where you can avoid this. For example the east coast of Greece is almost entirely protected by the Greek mainland mountains, which also create a reliable afternoon sea breeze to waft you gently into the next port. The breeze takes half the day to develop so you can get in some proper sun-bathing time in the morning or just visit the picturesque town you’ve berthed in, then you can go for a sail (little waves only) in the afternoon. And best of all, once the sun goes down, so does the wind. Just in time to enjoy a gin and tonic sundowner, not a hair out of place. Who’s the yachtie now?

If you holiday in the winter then top up on the tan in those long, wan winter months by visiting to the British Virgin islands. Protected waters, sunny, food and drink at every stop, blue waters and bath-temperature seas. Not to mention stunningly beautiful coral reefs. A trip to the BVIs in November or December followed by skiing in March (or the other way around) must be the ultimate ‘winter blues’ remedy.

Any other top tips? Well, for the Caribbean I can recommend a catamaran, not a monohull, charter. It’s cat country out there. Cat’s are faster, more stable, have more space and have a much more ‘normal’ layout if you’re not used to yachts. The Med is slightly different. There a catamaran can be more trouble than its worth when you arrive when trying to find a space in those tightly packed meditteranean town quays. Still, it is possible and if you’re keen for a cat and also hiring a skipper then you can let him worry about those kind of details. A good local skipper will find the space in every town quay however packed it may look.

So next time you come back from holiday, don’t say “i’m just back from holiday”, try “i’ve been holidaying on my yacht”. Well, it is yours for a week or two. Now how does that sound?

Things to Bring When You're on an African Safari Trip http://balashiha.su/?p=8711 http://balashiha.su/?p=8711#respond Mon, 08 Aug 2011 05:37:40 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=8711 Things to Bring When You're on an African Safari Trip

Safari Clothing – The clothes you bring on a trip are important because you want to be both comfortable and protected. In the wilds of Africa, a long sleeve shirt is a must to bring to protect you from annoying mosquito bites and to keep you from the hot sun as well. You’ll need long trousers too for the same reasons. Avoid also bright colored clothing because it can attract animals. For that reason, most safari clothing you will find come in khaki, tan, and light brown. Neutral colors are also effective in keeping you cooler during warm days. Back Pack – When you pack for your African travel, you have to carry your back pack not more than 25 pounds since you will be lugging it around from camp to camp. Make sure that the straps of your pack fit you comfortably. Thus it is also better to talk to your travel specialist of how many things will you be bringing because you may only need a few days of clothing supply since many of the camps and lodges have laundry facilities. Sun and Mosquito Protection – You have to keep in mind that you are not going to a beach, but to a Safari. Therefore you will most probably encounter mosquitoes so it is better to bring strong mosquito repellent containing DEET with you. Be sure to spray your clothes and exposed skin. Avoid also using perfume, hairspray, and other scented products because they may attract mosquitoes. Remember to also pack sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Polarized Sunglasses – Bring polarized sunglasses with good quality to protect you from the strong, bright sun. Good Walking Shoes – Bring comfortable shoes that fit you well. Pack good quality socks too. These can help you walk and roam around the place easy. Sun Hat – Bring a quality hat with a good brim to cover your face and ears. Camera – Capture the wonderful sceneries and as well as rare animals that you see in the Safari. Make sure to bring also extra batteries. Other things that you can bring are: Personal toiletries, binoculars, basic medical supplies, tissues, waterproof bags for camera and electronic devices.

Vacation Vocabulary For The New Millennium – Or What's In A Name http://balashiha.su/?p=10174 http://balashiha.su/?p=10174#respond Sun, 17 Jul 2011 13:52:57 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=10174 Vacation Vocabulary For The New Millennium – Or What's In A Name?

Everyone is familiar with the word Stay-cation, invented to describe staying home instead of traveling during vacation time from work. It’s all about mowing the lawn, feeding the cat, watching TV, ordering pizza…yawn…are we bored yet?

The genius who created this little hybrid word started a trend; one that is almost out of control today. New names are popping up like mushrooms for all kinds of specialized vacations. Allow me to bring you up to date.

For a male who occasionally gets the urge to bond with guy friends, a Man-cation might be just the ticket. Fueled by testosterone, this is a vacation with hair on it. It could be about golf, sport fishing, camping, some friendly wagering, good natured ribbing, a few pranks and other activities common to all-male gatherings.

Conversely, the ladies might be in the market for an all female getaway…a Fem-cation, if you will. These are probably estrogen driven outings of some kind…I wouldn’t know for sure….some things are still a total mystery to those of us burdened with the Y- chromosome.

How about a Nude-cation – a trip for the uninhibited, those who just can’t wait to take it all off…leaving their swim suits and modesty at home. Unfortunately, this too often includes people who just don’t look very good naked anymore. One thing is for certain; however, nude-cations are a bonanza for sun block vendors and mosquitoes.

A Space-cation – Just visualize the fun and excitement…the count down…blast off…weightlessness…vertigo…nausea…little globules of vomit floating around the command module.

Seriously, this could be something as simple as a space camp for kids; or, for adults, an official NASA sponsored astronaut training down at the Cape in Florida.

The apex of the space-cation experience? If you have the required six or seven figure budget at your disposal, it is a real, actual trip into the blackness of outer space. (Hmmmm…wonder if the standard 10% commission applies?)

Got clients with young children? How about a Kid-cation – something just for kids? Could be as simple as staying at a hotel or resort that caters to youngsters – indestructible wallpaper, Jell-O, mac & cheese, hamburgers and Cokes at every meal, etc. This is a great way to go for families…but best to avoid long drives in the mini-van, especially if you are allergic to the phrase “are we there yet?”

The ultimate kid-cation, of course, is a six day pass to Disney World…or a cruise of one of the Disney ships.

And, yes Virginia, there are Procreation Vacations – very popular with those who are ready to start a family. Part fertility clinic, part luxury resort, these destinations provide the perfect romantic environment… including couples massages, special diets, magic potions, specific exercises, ointments, pagan rituals…whatever it takes to guarantee that making whoopee will make a bay bee!

Then there is that getaway wildlypopular with Baby Boomers – Medical Travel – known today as Medi-cations. No doctor’s prescription is needed. These little junkets are all about traveling to other countries to seek treatment for whatever ails you…even if it is just an excess of wrinkles or worn body parts where looks and/or performance is just not up to par.

How about a Luxura-cation? A trip for lovers of luxury, pampering, spa treatments, total indulgence…trips for those who believe anything worth doing is worth over-doing. A topnotch luxura-cation provides endless opportunities for sensory overload.

Last but not least is the unbelievably popular category, Educational Vacations or Edu-cations. These are all about learning, attending lectures, studying or going to school while traveling. This segment is experiencing exponential growth…especially on cruise ships…so much so that a future article will be dedicated exclusively to this category. (Holland America pioneered this field. HAL ships now have dedicated on-board facilities that feature high interest offerings such as Culinary Arts taught by well known Master Chefs.)

In closing, I strongly urge you to familiarize yourself with these terms, because…to put it bluntly, simply asking clients if they are ready for a “vacation” is sooooo last century.

Why not demonstrate that you are in tune with the times by indulging in a little vacation name dropping? It won’t hurt and just might help business.

Here they are again for your edification and review:

– Stay-cation

– Man-cation

– Fem-cation

– Nude-cation

– Kid-cation

– Space-cation

– Medi-cation

– Procreation Vacation (see also – Pregna-cation)

– Luxura-cation

– Medi-cation (Medical Tourism – not to be confused with travel to the Mediterranean)

Packing the Suitcase http://balashiha.su/?p=6727 http://balashiha.su/?p=6727#respond Fri, 03 Jun 2011 02:10:58 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=6727 Packing the Suitcase…Basics 101 for a Family Vacation

We love to go on vacation, and the experiences we share with our families are
amazing, but the packing that is involved can end up being a nightmare. It can be
a huge project and if not planned out properly will end with you needing another
vacation from your vacation.
A requirement for a well planned out vacation is an organized. Packing is an art
and a few helpful tips can make your vacation go smoothly.
How many times do we forget to pack the simple everyday items such
as toothpaste or a hairbrush? There is a way to remember such items.
A week before your planned trip, grab a pen and paper and write down all the
things that come to mind that you know you need to bring. Start with bathroom
essentials, and then move to garment essentials beginning from the head and
going to the toe. Don’t take for granted the myth that because you wear clothes
every day you will remember to pack them. Continue to add things to your list
as the week goes on. You will be surprised the things you miss each day as you
carry on with your daily lives.
Your list won’t do you any good if you don’t check things off as you pack them
prior to the big day. Make sure you check it twice!
Valuable tips for traveling families:

Let the little ones pack back pack with their favorite toys to keep
them busy. Plus they feel important having their own bag to carry.

Don’t OverPack. It is better to Underpack then over pack. Don’t bring the
closet, just visit a Laundromat. Buy T-shirts as your souvenirs that you
can wear while on vacation.

Pack your items in groups, like socks, pants, shirts. That way you are not
scattering through the luggage.

Pack clothes that are easy to care for. Stay wrinkle free; try rayon if you
need to bring a couple nice outfits for evenings out.

It’s ok to “mix and match.” This cuts down on the amount of outfits you
have to pack.

One thing you do need to overpack on…..Underwear. Believe it or not,
that is one thing you NEED to change on a daily basis and with kids
sometimes more than once

Days may be hot, but evenings may be cold, so always bring a sweater or
a wrap, even in the summer.

A trip won’t be enjoyable if your feet are killing you, so pack an extra pair
of well-broken-in walking shoes.
Pre-planning and organizing your trip in advance will save you tons of
troubles and quite a few less nightmares to bare.

Lyme Disease – Don’t Let a Serious Tick Bite Ruin Your Holiday http://balashiha.su/?p=6057 http://balashiha.su/?p=6057#respond Tue, 26 Apr 2011 06:11:58 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=6057 Lyme Disease – Don’t Let a Serious Tick Bite Ruin Your Holiday

Travelers, campers, and vacationers alike can be at risk for getting Lyme disease, a serious, debilitating condition caused by being bitten by an infected tick.

What are the symptoms of Lyme disease?

Some of the symptoms of Lyme disease are the classic bull’s-eye red rash, fatigue or loss of energy, feeling sleepy, tingling and numbness, swollen and painful joints, memory loss, and feeling like you are getting the flu.  Paralysis of the face is a less common symptom.

Lyme disease can make your life miserable and cause you a lot of pain and suffering if it’s not diagnosed and treated right away.  The longer you wait before seeing a health professional allows this disease to progress quickly and it may not be possible to lessen it’s effects.

How is Lyme disease spread?

Ticks bite and then feed on animals like mice, other small rodents, and deer.  If these animals are harboring the Lyme bacteria, they can pass this  bacteria on to the ticks.  And if people are bitten by an infected tick they may contract Lyme disease.

What steps can you take to reduce the chance of getting Lyme disease?

Some people do not have symptoms that show right away so prevention is always the best policy.  If you are traveling in the spring and summer months to or through areas where deer, mice, other rodents and animals live, the following are some things you can do.

When you are camping on holidays or vacation, you can lessen the number of ticks around your campsite by cleaning up any brush and leaves debris.  Wearing light colored clothing helps you to easily see these very tiny black insects and remove them before they get attached to your skin.  Make sure you wear long-sleeved shirts and tuck them inside your pants.  Always tuck your pant cuffs inside of your socks.  It is also a good idea to wear rubber boots as ticks are commonly found close to the ground.  However, you may also get them in your hair if you happen to brush against any leaves on a low tree branch.  Wearing a light-colored, wide-brimmed hat will help.  Be sure to check your skin and scalp carefully as ticks can easily be overlooked, especially in your hair.  Applying a DEET insect repellent to your clothes and exposed skin, as well as applying permethrin, an insecticide, to your clothes will also help.

How can you remove ticks safely?

Ticks that have burrowed and embedded themselves underneath your skin can be removed by using a small-tipped tweezers.  Do not leave any part of the tick remaining under your skin.  When the tick has been totally removed, disinfect the wound thoroughly with hydrogen peroxide or alcohol.  Keep in mind that you are not totally out of the woods yet, so to speak, as the symptoms can take a number of days or weeks before they show.  Using tweezers is the only safe way to remove ticks from under your skin or scalp.  Don’t try to remove any ticks by using burnt matches, petroleum jelly, or alcohol as this will aggravate them, causing them to release more of the bacteria into your blood stream.

Please note that there is no vaccine available for Lyme disease.

The Center For Disease Control And Prevention (CDC) states that this bacterial disease is vastly under reported, perhaps by well over 100,000 cases per year in the U.S. alone.  Visit their website at cdc.gov for more information on Lyme disease.

Mind your Manners: French Etiquette http://balashiha.su/?p=6281 http://balashiha.su/?p=6281#respond Tue, 12 Apr 2011 01:58:51 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=6281 Mind your Manners: French Etiquette

Everyday Etiquette: France

Meeting People

In general the French prefer to be introduced to strangers, if at all possible wait for a third party introduction when meeting someone new. When speaking with someone it is common to use their title plus their family name (Madame Brown) until given permission to do otherwise.

Personal compliments and comments on physical appearance (I love your dress) are not appropriate as they are considered overly personal.

The exchange of business cards is a common practice when first meeting someone

Physical Greetings

When greeting someone a handshake accompanied by a “Pleased to meet you” is appropriate. When departing be sure to shake everyone’s hand, a general group wave as is often done in the United States is not looked on favorably.

An “air kiss” is an appropriate greeting once you have established a relationship with someone.

Physical Space

The French are comfortable with standing slightly closer to one another than Americans do.

Eye Contact

Intense direct eye contact is common, looking away is a sign of disinterest and/or that you are behaving rude.

Good Topics of Discussion

Politics, issues of controversy, current events, soccer, arts and anything that results in a good debate.

Bad Topics of Discussion

Avoid the common American question of “what do you do?” as it is considered rude and too personal. Also avoid commenting on specific “French” things unless you are an expert on the topic.

Communication Style

Moments of silence in France are rare once a conversation gets rolling. Initially upon meeting the French are politely restrained but once they get to know you they can be loud and highly animated.

The French are a combination of the logical North and the passionate South and as a result they are often able to process and explain their points quite logically, however when an issue arises of which they are passionate about a highly dramatic outburst can occur.

Waiting in Line

In general the French are not fantastic about waiting in line. A friendship with the banker at a bank might allow you to bypass the line altogether.

Walking

France is a country of walkers; the majority of errands are done on foot.

Shopping

Customer service is not as “in your face” as it is in the United States. Generally a salesclerk will ignore you until eye contact is made signaling service is required. A person who is dressed nicely will get more respect and better treatment than a person who is dressed in sweats and a t-shirt.

When shopping at the grocery store be aware that if you touch the fruits or vegetables—you buy them.

Public Transportation

When on the bus or train it is polite to give up your seat for the elderly, handicapped, pregnant women and parents with children.

Casual conversations with strangers on public transportation is not common or overly welcome.

Tipping

The tip is generally already included in the price at a restaurant. A standard tip for a taxi driver is 10 percent. Bellmen usually receive 1 Euro per bag.

Appropriate Dress

The French are very thoughtful in their style of dress and value taste and quality. What one chooses to wear in the morning is always very well thought out. In general the French dress more formally than Americans do.

Women are very concerned with their skin (facials begin at a young age) and hairstyles. Accessories are a must and unique color combining is common.

Meal Time

Breakfast is typically from 7 to 9 AM.

A traditional French Breakfast is a cup of coffee along with a croissant.

Lunch is typically from 12 to 2 PM

Traditionally lunch is the largest meal of the day and can be quite elaborate. Nowadays a typical lunch is often sandwiches or salads, and meat and vegetable plates. Desert, wine and coffee almost always accompany the meal.

Dinner is typically from 7:30 to 8:30 PM.

Dinner consists of an appetizer, soup, a main course, dessert, coffee and chocolates. Wine is carefully selected and always served.

Table Manners

The French do not switch their knife and fork as people do in the States. The fork remains in the left hand and the knife in the right hand. Almost everything in France is eaten with a knife and fork.

Placing your utensils down on your plate signifies to wait staff that you are finished.

When not in use keep your hands in your lap and pass dishes to the left.

Who Pays?

In general the person who did the inviting is the person that pays.

Punctuality

Arriving “fashionably late” (15-20 minutes) is acceptable.
