Travel Secret – Why Slow is Better http://balashiha.su/?p=9695 http://balashiha.su/?p=9695#respond Thu, 22 Sep 2011 16:58:19 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=9695 Travel Secret – Why Slow is Better

Our top travel secret isn’t really a secret at all, but it takes a while for some of us to learn and apply it. Here it is: Slow down. Slowing down and spending more time in each location is not only a secret of cheap travel, but in our experience, it means more fun.

Slowing Down For Cheap Travel

We returned yesterday (August 13, 2007) from a ten-day road trip, and I can report that going slower saved us money, as it usually does. This isn’t just about driving less, though when we started driving 200 miles in a day instead of 600 we certainly saved on gas. However, we also found that with time on our hands, we could do a better job shopping for a place to stay or to eat.

Make the big mile days the ones that pass through the boring stretches. Then when you come to an interesting place, find nice, affordable lodging and stick around a while. Once, while driving around the country camping in our van, we discovered hot springs in a wild part of Arizona, with picnic tables and bathrooms and desert hills to explore – everything we needed at the time. It cost just $3 per night, so it was easy to stay a while.

In fact, we stayed for eight days, enjoying the hot pools even during an unusual snowy day in the desert. We took daily hikes and hunted for antiquities and rocks in the surrounding hills, but more on that in a moment. Just once, we drove into the nearest town for groceries and water, so the entire eight days might have cost us $80 or so. That’s cheap travel.

Five years back we stumbled into a great mountain town where we wanted to stay a while. We were in town early, instead of our usual driving until evening and scrambling to find a hotel, so we had time to check things out without rushing. We asked around and heard about a hotel above a pub. The rest of the hotel rooms in town were generally $60 per night and up, but we got a room above the pub for $120 – for an entire week. It had a stove and refrigerator, so we could cook our own meals if we wanted to save more.

Slowing Down Means Better Travel Experiences

More important than the fact that slowing down means cheap travel is the fact that when you go slower you discover things you would have missed. While at the hot springs mentioned above, for example, we befriended a Mayan Indian who brought us to an old Pony Express station in the desert hills. It still had parts of the old walls remaining.

He showed us areas where we could find old arrowheads, and we found some. Out in the middle of the desert, he showed us perfectly round holes that had been drilled into the rocks hundreds of years earlier. They were used for water storage. In our van, we followed him to an area where ancient pottery littered the desert, and where gemstones could be found as well.

We wouldn’t have found these things on our own. The experiences were also only possible because we didn’t rush from one park to another, trying to fit as many “sights” into a trip as possible. It may not be a secret that a slow trip can be more interesting, but not many people seem to want to try this more relaxing, slower pace.

Where we stayed a week for $120 in that mountain town, we discovered area waterfalls and secret mountain lakes that only the locals knew about. The town was our base as we made trips into the surrounding area. Talking to people in local bars lead us to a well-preserved ghost town that wasn’t on our map. Its streets were still full of buildings and foundations, but no tourists – one other car pulled in while we were there.

Our travel secret number one: slow down to save money and enjoy the trip more.

Erik Hastings on Travel Broadcasting http://balashiha.su/?p=3141 http://balashiha.su/?p=3141#respond Thu, 15 Sep 2011 03:17:48 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=3141 Erik Hastings on Travel Broadcasting

Erik Hastings, travel expert and host of The Travel Show on WABC Radio, the biggest station in New York, was the guest on the Steve Perillo Travel Show this week. In his conversation with Steve Perillo, the third generation CEO of Perillo Tours, Erik Hastings shares his opinion on who should be called a travel expert. He feels that only people like Arthur Frommer, who have traveled extensively and have years of experience doing it should be called travel experts.
He also admits that he likes to do more than just write articles on travel and that is why he does the radio show. He feels that people should see and hear more about the places they want to travel. He also says that consumers should get a more experiential feel of the place.
On the second part of the Perillo Travel Show, Erik Hastings recounts how he began his career in travel broadcasting industry and his journey towards The Travel Show host on WABC. He reveals to Steve Perillo that he started doing radio from the age of 15, but later quit his job to pursue a career in acting. When his acting career failed to take off, he decided to go back to radio on his friend’s suggestion. He started as a vacation relief board operator and went on to become the host on The Travel Show on WABC.
When quizzed if he wanted to do television after his travel show on radio, Erik Hastings answers that there is more potential for growth on the web than television. According to him, people can get unbiased and good information only on the web.

Things to do on your gap year in Australia http://balashiha.su/?p=8761 http://balashiha.su/?p=8761#respond Fri, 26 Aug 2011 07:11:33 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=8761 Things to do on your gap year in Australia

Adventure activities

Scuba diving

Australia has some fantastic opportunities for scuba diving. The Great Barrier reef is famed the whole world over, so it’s hardly surprising that it’s one of the top diving hotspots. One that you might not be familiar with, however, is the Nigaloo Reef.

Cadge diving

It’s the crowning jewel of the Nigaloo Reef Marine Park and gives divers the unique opportunity to dive with whale sharks. These stunning creatures can grow to a massive 18 metres in length but luckily, they’re no threat to humans. Still, it takes a brave traveller to swim alongside them.

Swimming with sea lions

If you’d rather take a dip with something a little cuter, head for Baird Bay on the west coast of South Australia. Here you’ll have the chance to swim with sea lions – an altogether more playful set.

Rock climbing

Now how about a bit of rock climbing on Australia’s best-known landmark? That’s right, you can take a trip to the top of Ayers Rock – the hard way. So if you want to give climbing a go, there couldn’t be a better place to start.

Surfing

Surfing is an essential activity in Australia. The coast is stunning wherever you are but there are some beaches that are just perfect for surfing. Bells Beach, Bondi Beach, Byron Bay and the Gold Coast are just a few examples – but you won’t know how good they are until you’ve tried them.

Dizzying heights

And finally, don’t forget to take a trip to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It offers some fantastic views over the city and will give you some great memories.

Volunteering

Like a good bottle of wine, Australia is great fun and half empty in the best of senses! Australia presents many ideal opportunities for adventure and exploration. The huge interior hinterland is home only to kangaroos, wallabies and dust, so there’s plenty to explore. The European settlers don’t seem to have reached the red centre so it remains a fascinating living fossil of Aboriginal culture for anyone armed with factor ‘one million’ sunscreen and a good hat to enjoy. Distances are on the massive side so a Zen-like appreciation for the journey as well as the destination is advised, as well as a desire to meet some of the world’s most intriguing animals.

Volunteering here is a great way to get around the whole country and see the best of this giant from the cool sophisticated coast to the tropical north. The colours sum up the beauty of the country; from the red centre to the gold coast, greens thrive where they can before being frazzled out of existence and retreating to the tropical safety of the north. The beautiful scenery is breathtaking and the locals want to keep it that way, there are therefore, lots of volunteer projects focusing on nature and wildlife conservation.

Nature conservation working holiday

Meaningful travel company i-to-i have recently launched a new trip that will give travellers the chance to spend a hassle free gap year in Australia. Not only will the company sort out al the paper work they’ll give you a years access to their job placement service and a week working at a conservation project at any one of 20 destinations across the country, take a look here http://www.i-to-i.com/volunteer-projects/australia-working-holiday-and-conservation-experience.html

Public Transport Etiqutte http://balashiha.su/?p=7089 http://balashiha.su/?p=7089#respond Sun, 03 Jul 2011 02:02:55 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=7089 Public Transport Etiqutte

Inside modern society, it appears apparent, certainly to me, that we are generally residing in a self obsessed society. We want the very best for ourselves, and forget about everybody else. This is never more apparent than on public transport. I reside in London, and for work, have to travel into central London on the London underground train network, and also London busses. This journey lasts roughly sixty minutes, so a couple of hours to my job and back every day. Daily, I’ll see people who have very little regard for others, only doing what suits themselves best, and I believe it’s a shame folks have this attitude. In this article, I’d like to put forward ideas relating to the correct etiquette when using trains and buses, that ought to make the journey and experience a pleasure to every one who make use of it.
Firstly, I’d want to mention the beginning of the journey, as starting well, will put you off on a good foot. When boarding a train or bus, it’s kind and considerate to stand around the side of the doors while they open, so that it will allow those coming off the train or bus adequate space in which to do so. It’s not a good idea to stand directly infront of the opening door, as the person getting off is going to squeeze past you, and most likely might come barging into you with their body or their possessions.
For everyone travelling with luggage that can take up lots of room, or perhaps with babies or young children, it’s recommended that you travel during off peak hours when possible. I wouldn’t recommend travelling along with your suitcase at 8am on a weekday within rush hour, as those around you are in a rush, and possess little patience, and are often in a poor mind set already at the prospect of going to work, so don’t tip them over the edge. Travelling with big luggage uses up a lot of room, that’s much needed during busy periods, plus holds back those surrounding you as you move it. Another good idea when carrying big luggage is to try and get on the train or bus last out of those getting on. You’ll discover, if you get on the train or bus first along with your suitcase, and the transport then fills out and you need to get off, how hard is it likely to be trying to squeeze that suitcase past everyone so you can get off? It’s far easier to stand nearby the door, out of the way, to ensure people can simply get on / off around you, and so that you disturb few individuals when exiting yourself. Obviously, possibly you have a strict schedule where you can’t get rid of travelling during busy periods, but if you do, try and be considerate and see things from the point of view of the other passengers.
When on the train, don’t be someone who has their mp3 music player or personal stereo on at a ridiculous volume, effecting those around you. Also, on a similar note, it’s no fun if someone next to you is eating take out, or some other food with a strong smell, particularly when they discard of the leftovers in a casual manner, leaving the box on a seat or on the ground.
This brings me onto another point, litter. Whatever you bring onto the train or bus, should go with you once you leave. Don’t dump stuff behind you, as your making the transport method a less enjoyable experience to the individuals that need to make use of it.
If your seated and see an old person, or someone with a disability, or a person with a child, please surrender your seat for that person, particularly when your in good health yourself, as I’m sure that person needs the seat much more than you.
This is the end of this article, and I hope you found it an enjoyable read, and gained something from it. I’d like to thank you for reading.

Drinking on Board of Air Mauritius Flight http://balashiha.su/?p=2866 http://balashiha.su/?p=2866#respond Fri, 03 Jun 2011 23:37:58 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=2866 Drinking on Board of Air Mauritius Flight

You are warned. Fly but don’t get drunk, says Minister.

There is an issue with the number of drunken passengers on Air Mauritius flights, says the Minister of Tourism and External Communication, Mr. Xavier Luc Duval. “They cause problems to other passengers and staff and now Government wants to put into place preventive measures. We intend to have a law that will allow us to prosecute disruptive passengers once they land,” he adds.

However, he says: “We will not ban drinking on our flights; we do not want to change the customer’s experience. Why should we penalize the majority of well-behaved passengers because of a drunken few?” The proposed Civil Aviation (Hijacking and other Offences) (Amendment) Bill, under section 5A reads as follows: Any person who, on board an Aircraft flight – (a) intimidates or threatens a crew member, whether physically or verbally, or uses abusive language against him, or lessens the ability of a crew member to perform his duties; (b) obstructs or hinders a crew member in the performance of his duties; (c) willfully refuses to follow a lawful instruction given by the aircraft commander, or on behalf of the aircraft commander by a crew member, for the purpose of ensuring the safety of the aircraft or of any person or property on board, or for the purpose of maintaining good order and discipline on board, shall commit an offence.

(2) Any person who, on board an Air Mauritius in flight (a) intimidates or threatens, whether physically or verbally another person or uses abusive language against another person; (b) willfully damages or destroys property not belonging to him;(c) is under the influence of an intoxicating drink (i.e. alcohol) or of a drug to such extent as to be incapable of behaving properly, shall commit an offence. One tour Operator believes that the new legislation would be a step towards the right direction. “This is an excellent initiative. The Bill would bring Mauritius in line with other countries, which have laws that offer protection on flights. It is important that at a time when we expect a rise in the volume of tourists, we can assure flight staff a safe working environment.”

The president of the Association of Travel Agencies, Mr. Willy Cheung said: “It is a good piece of legislation that will act as a deterrent. It will protect the cabin crews, and the passengers too.” One steward said: “This new legislation was long overdue. Flight crews have had enough with drunken passengers. They think that we are here to put up with their abuse and ill manners. Not only do they make our job tougher but also they spoil the mood of other passengers. I applaud the Government for this initiative.” An airhostess said: “Dealing with drunken passengers is a cabin crew’s worst nightmare. We must be very initiative to find a diplomatic ways to ask them to stop drinking. We have received training to deal with this issue, but I must confess, it can get quite tiring.

Strange Careers Within The Travel Industry http://balashiha.su/?p=7990 http://balashiha.su/?p=7990#respond Mon, 30 May 2011 18:35:37 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=7990 Strange Careers Within The Travel Industry

We all were shocked and concerned when we found out that US Airways flight 1549 was forced to land in New York’s Hudson River on January 15, 2009. Apparently geese were sucked into one or both of the airplane’s engines, causing the plane to go down. For quite some time now, airports and airline companies have known that birds can pose quite a threat to an airplanes engine, and many airports have come up with different ways to combat the issues.
For example, in Amsterdam at the Schipol Airport, a robotic hawk flies around scaring all of the birds away so that airplanes can safely take off and land. However, if you’d like an even stranger job within the travel industry, head on over to the Zurich Airport. Here, they employ three hunters to shoot down potentially damaging creatures. When we travel it’s easy to overlook these strange jobs that are necessary, but it is because of these jobs that we are able to travel safely.
Airport hunters are just one of the strangest jobs that you’ll find out there. Don’t be surprised if you feel that some of these other jobs are even stranger.
Many travel-industry jobs are all about keeping Mother Nature at bay. You’ll find jobs ranging from keeping pesky seagulls from invading the Four Seasons’ pool in Santa Barbara, to keeping pigeons from freckling monuments with their droppings in Italy, to keeping monkeys from stealing guests cookies in India.
“Monkey Men” are what they are called. These men are employed by a plush resort in India and spend their day chasing primates who are prone to stealing guests’ cookies. Who knows, maybe the monkey’s need a few extra cookies for their tea party on the other side of the resorts stone wall.
Coconut Safety Engineer
At the Ritz Carlton in St. Thomas Virgin Islands a man by the name of Shaka shimmies up the resorts palm trees, which tower between 20 to 60 feet high to pick ripe coconuts. There have been a few studies that have found that ripened falling coconuts can cause severe head injuries and even death, so it is up to Shaka to take care of the problem. As he climbs up the trees, he isn’t just putting on a show for the guests, he is helping to keep them safe. Onlookers may even get the chance to sample some fresh coconut when he cracks one open after his descent. Shaka also shares the fruits of his labors poolside at a sunset get together announced by the blowing of the conch shell.
Karaoke Taxi Drivers
In Helsinki, Finland, you’ll find Karaoke taxi drivers, who will entertain you as you ride along. No more are the days of shallow chitchat with your cab driver; here in these brightly colored Mercedes minivans, you’ll have the opportunity to join in the fun and sing a song of your own. These taxis seat from eight to thirteen riders and are equipped with 5,000 songs. These type of taxis are rare to find just waiting to be hailed on the street, no you’ll have to book in advance over the phone for this unique experience.
Sewer Guide
In Paris, smell-tolerant visitors can visit the Museum of the Sewers, which has been a hit since it first opened in the 19th century. Most often, sewer guides are ex-sewer workers, so they have developed a threshold for the aromatic hazards. The sewer museum has long been held as the underground masterpiece of Paris, where sewer lines correspond by name to the streets above. You may even have the chance to see pipes emptying from the corresponding homes. At only $6 for entrance,  you’ll have an interesting and memory building experience.
LEGO Professional Gluer
We all remember as kids building towers out of Legos, so the biggest draw for Lego fans is Miniland USA, which is where professional Lego engineers and gluers, erect models of the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Vegas strip. The team of Master Model Builders divvies up the responsibilities of designing, building, and maintaining the models. The group that maintains the models periodically go around and clean or add UV coating to the models, and the builders are the ones who painstakingly glue the bricks together based on the designer’s plans. At Miniland USA, the Master Model Builders have become their own exhibit, featuring a giant window on one side of their workshop. Here, you’ll have the chance to see the builders at work and discover how those intricate models are actually made.
Manners Police
In Venice, birds and their droppings on statues and monuments have been a thorn in the side of officials. Even though they have to watch over the bird population, these days there is an even bigger pest that needs monitoring. The manners police, who are referred to as “Volunteer Angels”, try to keep at bay uncouth tourists who may be traipsing around shirtless or who sit down in the middle of the sidewalk to eat a sandwich. These “angels” have been on duty for a couple of years to intervene in any flagrant pec-flashing or sandwich-eating. The volunteer crew is made up of 50 people, mainly locals and mainly women ranging in age from 20 to 60. Usually they’l give offenders a friendly warning, but if needs be, they will flag a traffic cop to fine the offenders. So, next time you visit Venice, make sure to keep your shirt on and do not eat a sandwich in the middle of the sidewalk.
These are just a few of the strange jobs found within the travel industry. With the bad economy and record unemployment, who knows, we may just see more people flocking to fill positions such as these. These days, if you can think up a potential job, it probably exists somewhere out there.

Choosing Your Next Vacation Tour http://balashiha.su/?p=2270 http://balashiha.su/?p=2270#respond Thu, 19 May 2011 16:29:53 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=2270 Choosing Your Next Vacation Tour

Who wouldn’t love to spend a week or two touring the major cities and smaller villages of Italy? One of the most beautiful settings in Europe to visit, Italy offers something for everyone – no matter what their interests. Although fairly easy to maneuver on your own, many people simply do not feel comfortable enough setting off on a journey through an unfamiliar land (especially one where the majority of the people speak another language), so they prefer to tour the sights with a group.

This, however, can be a scary endeavor, especially if you are not used to travelling in a group.  Too many people think that touring in a group means being stuck in a crowded bus with a group of strangers for two weeks schlepping from one tourist destination to another with barely enough time to see the sights, let alone enjoy them. But that is not the case at all! There are plenty of ways to tour Italy – or any other destination for that matter – that will enable you to see just the sites you want, in a pace that is most comfortable for you. Plus, you have the opportunity to make a few new friends along the way.

If large groups make you uncomfortable, then you can choose a smaller, more intimate grouping.  Or if you would rather travel with people your own age; demographic group or interest area, that can be easily arranged too.  It doesn’t matter whether you are interested in hitting the major tourist hotspots, or would rather visit more off-the-beaten path sites you may have missed otherwise, there is a tour option to fit everyone tourists expectations and dreams.

Pre-planned tours are a great way to relax and have fun. After all, why not let someone else do all the work if you don’t have to?  Wondering what types of tours are available to cater to your individual tastes and interests? Here are just a few ways to tour Italy in a group that you may not be aware of:

  • Biking Tours. Most of us have only dreamed of casually biking through the quaint villages in Europe. Turn that dream into a reality with a bilking tour of Italy’s countryside. From one day to one week excursions, there are plenty of different tours to suit just about every interest.
  • Walking Tours.  Some people just have to explore every nook and cranny of place firsthand to feel as if they have been there. If the idea of sitting on a bus day in and day out just doesn’t appeal to you, consider taking in the major cities of Italy on foot.  Most package tours offer some walking trips around the major tourist spots; but some offer all-day walking tours to allow you the opportunity to get up and personal with both the cities and its native peoples.
  • Specialized Art/Architecture Tours.  Italy is known for its exquisite art and architecture. If those are two passions of yours, be sure to consider booking a tour designed specifically to introduce visitors to the extraordinary artwork and museums here as well as the opportunity to delve deeper into the history of each city’s architecture.
  • Spooktacular Fun Tours.  If you are not afraid to delve deeper into the more spooky aspects of Italy, consider taking a tour of Rome’s catacombs; a countryside castle or vampire; a tour of Rome’s angels and demons or other scary ghostly encounter.  Although not for everyone, they sure can be fun.
  • Food and Wine Tours. Maybe one of the most popular types of tours available in Italy (other than the main attractions), food and wine tours offer a great way to experience the best culinary specialties in the country, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at Italy’s best wineries.  Food lovers will enjoy trying a variety of culinary specialties as well as checking out the country’s most famous restaurants and chefs.

As you can see, it doesn’t matter what you are interested in: the history of Italy; its culture and food; art and architecture; or scary ghosts, finding a tour of Italy that will create a memorable experience really isn’t difficult.  All you really have to do is consider what sights you want to see; how you would like to travel (by bus, car, bike or on foot), what special interests you have and how large of a group you are interested in travelling with. Then let a professional touring agency find the best vacation tour for you.  After that, the only job you have left is to enjoy yourself! For more Information: www.queenslandertours.com

All About Worldwide City-Traveling http://balashiha.su/?p=774 http://balashiha.su/?p=774#respond Sat, 23 Apr 2011 01:24:47 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=774 All About Worldwide City-Traveling

Our modern world is something very fantastic, when you look at all the travel opportunities we have, and all these many ways to ride. This world shines only beautiful and bright, what could be there a problem. And we have all these buses, trains, ships, airplanes, to get to any place in the entire world with ease.
What is the truth.
It is the individual, who decides, to go for a vacation, but actually many don’t. They think, spending money for it is pure luxury and staying at home would easily make up for it. But this is not completely true. Living all year long at home, with planning for new furniture, or saving for better car or TV, does not bring the necessary satisfaction. Real relaxation from stress, workload and all the other ongoing responsibilities, does not take place in making one’s home look better, putting up expensive wallpaper, or driving a more attractive car.
Personal relaxation is proven as being something complete different than just money, car or TV. It is a very intimate spiritual thing, and cannot get measured up with luxury. Relaxation is, where one is alone or with one’s family and has lots of time together. It will create new joy and happiness with talking about things, never said since a long time. It may happen to be the very first moment, where daddy really talks freely to his children and is finding out by surprise, that the son is not as good in Math and needs some help. The wife is happy since ever, realizing that everybody is together, getting close attention, and here and there a kiss with some very lovely whispered words. This all did not happen since a long time. It is the moment, a family can re-union and makes new plans for the next year. This is much better, than any other plan made during the entire year, only for one’s job or for a WAL-Mart shopping cart.
This is the truth. Now let’s see, what can be really done.
An educated person knows, that there are several very different possibilities, how to spend vacation time most wisely. One should know them and choose the one, which fits best to the interests and also circumstances of the family. There should be a talk with all together after dinner.
Where does everybody wants to go, and how many people is it. Does the majority want to swim and lay sunbathing on a beach, or do they want to swim, but also climb the mountains? What will be the best destination? Flight tickets for a family, might be more expensive than just the gasoline for a car, but it might waste lots of valuable vacation time, driving there. But an intelligent evaluation on all the asked for travel possibilities will then discover, what is the best deal for this year, with the most fun and variety, everybody would like to enjoy.
The main actions for selecting the right destination from several offers of real value, are
1. Sitting together and talking about everybody’s ideas and personal likings.
2. To get an overall agreement, what the best solution is for a decent destination.
3. The money has to be somehow made available, so one can book and pay.
4. The tickets and plans are in everybody’s hands now, waiting for the adventurous trip to happen.
An ideal solution can be beaches, where Florida has some very excellent locations for that, or let’s take a cruise, the offers are pretty cheap and the environment of a ship can give you an exciting change in atmosphere. If you are able to spend some more money, then go more international. Europe is the most attractive area for having the most beautiful cities and places, and one can learn about other exciting civilizations and people.
But the main point is, you take your family this year and go. Surprise them all a bit with some exotic hotel and flight booking.
