Traveling Light to Oaxaca http://balashiha.su/?p=9887 http://balashiha.su/?p=9887#respond Tue, 20 Sep 2011 03:26:50 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=9887 Traveling Light to Oaxaca

Alvin Starkman  M.A., LL.B.

First-time travelers to Oaxaca, as well as return visitors and snowbirds, can all help to improve the financial lot of many struggling residents, aside from simply visiting the city and spending.

It’s a fact that tourism has indeed returned to the central valleys of the state of Oaxaca.  But as a result of the US economic crisis in 2008, so have many Oaxacans:   Oaxacan immigrants, documented and otherwise,  had previously been eking out a modest existence north of the border, often wiring money back to their motherland on a regular basis to help out parents, children and extended family members in need.  With fewer available jobs, the people flow has now been reversed.  Oaxacans are coming back to their native soil.  The economic implications are twofold:

1)      There are now more Oaxacans vying for work which continues to be a scarce commodity.

2)      With fewer Oaxacans working in the US, less money is being sent home.

Many hotel and B & B guests arrive with two suitcases … one filled with their clothes and toiletries, which fits snuggly inside a larger one.  The latter is used for the flight back home, to pack up purchases such as rugs and other textiles, black pottery and a variety of different ceramic pieces, alebrijes, and more traditional fine art. That larger suitcase need not be brought down empty.  Those who have already been sensitized to Oaxaca’s economic plight sometimes ask what they can bring to leave behind, filling their second piece of luggage with used clothing, pencils and pens, T – shirts and caps with logos of their local sports teams, and much more.  And then there are the travelers with young children who recognize that by the time the next summer arrives in their hometowns, the kids will have outgrown virtually everything they’ve brought down for them to wear.  Here in Oaxaca they find new homes for shoes, shorts, jeans, dresses and shirts.

Within less than an hour’s drive from downtown Oaxaca, townspeople in marginal communities subsist on tortillas, beans and rice, with meat and poultry reserved for only the most special of occasion.  Medical clinics and dental facilities are often stocked with inadequate equipment, instruments and supplies, and schools lack books.  Even the brightest students and those with the most drive and desire are denied the opportunity to complete their secondary education because the cost of transportation to attend high school in the larger centers is prohibitive relative to the means of their families.

Every visitor to the city of Oaxaca has the potential to make a significant contribution to the economic amelioration of residents of towns and villages in the central valleys, apart from buying handicrafts and art.

We all have much more clothing than we need.  Just look in your closet or in that chest of drawers in the basement.  You might even find your daughter’s old pair of eyeglasses from two prescriptions ago, useless to you but invaluable to a downtown optometrist with ties to villages with children whose parents have no money to buy glasses.  Dig out that gift from your mother-in-law — the sweater that’s far too gaudy, or the T – shirt she brought for you on her trip to Turkey three years ago, still in the plastic wrapper.  Do you really think that as you get older it’s realistic for you to actually start exercising as you did before, and that you’ll actually lose that paunch and fit into those size 32 jeans?  How long do you think it will take for those shirts with Saturday Night Fever collars to come back into style?  Here in Oaxaca they’ve never gone out of style.

The reluctance to personally distribute what you can no longer use is understandable.  Certainly filling up a couple of green garbage bags in the course of your annual spring cleaning and then taking them to the local clothing drop box is easier, and the anonymity which comes with it is somehow preferable.  It precludes any possibility of that feeling of discomfort that often results from directly confronting differences in economic status.  But for those Oaxacans in need, all contributions are welcomed and tremendously appreciated.

Bring whatever you can.  And if you’re not a packrat, there are other ways you can help:

1)      Ask your neighbors and relatives.  They’ll be happy to use the new-found closet space.

2)      If you’re a medical or dental professional, search the shelves in your storage cabinet for instruments that have become obsolete for your state-of-the-art practice.

3)      If you’re a manufacturer with over-runs, or wholesaler, jobber or retailer with stock that you just can’t move, consider packing up whatever will fit into that extra suitcase.

Not knowing what to do with it once you land in Oaxaca is certainly a legitimate, but not insurmountable concern.  Again, there are several options:

1)      The manager of your hotel or B & B might assist in distributing clothing to members of his cleaning staff who in all likelihood are of extremely modest means, or might suggest that some items be given to one of several local charities such as Estancia Fraternidad or Casa de La Mujer.

2)      If you plan to tour some of the craft villages, your tour guide or driver might be able to assist you, although residents of the more popular and consequently successful towns such as Teotitl?n del Valle and San Mart?n Tilcajete might not be the ones to whom your generosity should be directed.  Consider spending part of a day getting away from the more traditional tourist sights, perhaps venturing into the hills and tiny communities, the inhabitants of which are predominantly campesinos.  This affords an opportunity to see first hand the modest lifestyles of most Oaxacans and experience the “real” Mexico.  Your chauffeur should be happy to accommodate, and you can distribute goods as and to whom you wish.

3)      Drop your donation by the Oaxaca Lending Library on Calle Pino Suarez.  Its volunteers are involved in a number of outreach projects.

4)      Contact me and I’d be honored to come by your accommodations, pick up whatever you have, and ensure that it goes to good use.

Regular visitors to the city and the numerous returning snowbirds are afforded an even better and easier opportunity to help.  Consider leaving your entire Oaxaca wardrobe and all your toiletries in Oaxaca, permanently.  Remember, you still have more than enough to wear at home, and already having bathroom items awaiting you upon your return to Oaxaca can be quite convenient, especially in light of airline restrictions regarding sprays and bottles.

Pack it all up in a few boxes, or better yet buy an inexpensive chest of drawers to store your belongings, like I did about a dozen years ago when I was a frequent visitor to the city.  Toss in a few bars of soap or pieces of cedar to keep it all fresh smelling.  Then impose upon one of your Oaxacan or expat friends to keep it for you in a closet, corner or storage room.  For your subsequent visits to the city all you’ll be bringing down will be two suitcases filled with treasures for those in need.  And remember, with all that Oaxaca has to offer shoppers, craft collectors and art aficionados, there’s never a risk that you’ll return north with empty luggage.

Knowing more useful information on children's dvds http://balashiha.su/?p=5669 http://balashiha.su/?p=5669#respond Sun, 28 Nov 2010 22:38:20 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=5669 Knowing more useful information on children's dvds

Researchers have confirmed that little children are affected largely by what they listen in music and watch on television or in movies. However, even the most preeminent parents are frequently amazed by the amount of violence offered to little children these days even to those who are awfully young. It is being said that the initial few years of a child are truly vital for proper mental growth and also development. This is really true as a lot of psychological researches and also other developments have confirmed it. For this reason, many advanced learning or educational equipments have been initiated by teachers and other educationists, to guarantee the parents, a mentally strong child. This is the reason it is exceptionally vital that guardians control what kind of music children listen to and also what TV shows and movies they watch. Providentially, one method of doing so is by deciding on the children’s dvds, family travel and travel dvds.
Amazingly there are lots of good children’s dvds, family travel and travel dvds available that educate good values and also use respectable language. Whilst one might not be clever to completely cut the effect of media on these DVDs completely, as a minimum one can be convinced that young children are provided with something good to view, which will act as a counteract to balance all the violent behavior they get through in the most part of mainstream media. There are many child affable children’s dvds, family travel, travel dvds offered by different companies, but it does necessitate a thorough searching to get them. Nevertheless, when you think how much a kid can gain from watching these, then these are unquestionably worth the Endeavour.
Travel dvds are a grand gift for kids and there are several DVDs which might be suitable to their interests, which also makes watching them more enjoyable. There are children’s dvds featuring arts, animals, sports, dance and a lot more to pick from. There is a surety of having something which children will enjoy watching. Building a personal library of children’s DVD is really a great way to keep all those good movies on hand which will make your child to watch them time and again. Buying good children’s DVDs that teaches the moral values that you would like them to learn is really a good asset for your child’s bright future. Young children learn from you and the decisions you make may have a long lasting effect on them and also the decisions they make in future.

Top Family Staycations http://balashiha.su/?p=9224 http://balashiha.su/?p=9224#respond Sat, 30 Oct 2010 13:54:52 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=9224 Top Family Staycations

Need help planning a Family Staycation. Look no further, here is a quick guide for tips on planning your family’s Staycation.
Camping-Set up a tent! If you would like a camping staycation set up a tent in the back yard. If it seems like rain, set up the tent in the garage or maybe in the middle of your living room! It doesn’t matter where the tent is so long as you sleep in it. If you do not have a tent just pull out the sleeping bags and sleep under the stars or by the fireplace inside. No sleeping bags? Use blankets! You don’t need much gear to have a fun family camping trip to nowhere!
Out of the Kitchen–Cook out or pack a picnic! During your staycation you need to stay clear of the kitchen as much as possible. Either plan on cooking on the griddle or prepare picnic items that you can instantly grab from the fridge. Eat on a blanket outside or on the sitting room floor if the weather is bad. Or try something else by arranging a make-your-own pizza night or salad bar night. Both are good options if it’s raining and you are compelled to eat indoors. Tell stories as you eat and enjoy yourselves! Switch off the TV! No Television in a staycation… None! No PCs or cell telephones either. This is family time. Play board games, read books aloud, sing songs, tell stories, go for a stroll, ride bikes, climb trees. Just do something different!
Invite the Neighbors–Round up the neighbors! Want your staycation to be even more fun? Ask the neighbors to go on a staycation at the same time as you! Get together for B.B.Q.s and yard games. Take turns swimming in each others pools. Go spend a group day together at a park. Have family day at a local lake. Or have a family friendly block party! Take day trips! If you’re taking a whole week off or even a weekend off plan some day trips.
Be a Tourist–If you were on a regular vacation you would get out to see the sites. So you must do the same on your staycation! Visit a museum or go to the local library. Visit your fire station or police station. Walk around graveyards to take a look at old gravestones. Or take a ride to the lake or the beach or visit a store you haven’t ever been to. And save cash on food by bringing your own lunch.
Work- Get work done!– What? Working on a staycation? Sure! Why not! Work can be good fun when you do it as a family. Does your place need painting? Have a painting party! Invite everybody you know and ask them to bring food. Everybody can paint in the day then have a pleasant pot luck dinner in the evening. Those who need to spend the night can bring their own tents. This is a way and inexpensive way to do a huge task that you routinely would have to hire somebody to finish for you.
Swap homes!– If you are unable to afford to get away but you actually do need to get away considering swapping houses with another relative just so you may have a change of views. Perhaps you would like to run away from the town and can swap homes with someone that wants to get out of their little city for a bit. Or perhaps you can trade your lake front home for your best buddy’s beach house. Or perhaps you just need to enjoy a different back yard for a change. The entire point is to keep it inexpensively and to enjoy yourself. Family Staycation here you come!

Visiting Napa and Sonoma With Children http://balashiha.su/?p=10356 http://balashiha.su/?p=10356#respond Wed, 11 Aug 2010 05:42:06 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=10356 Visiting Napa and Sonoma With Children

We’ve often described the Northern California Wine Country as a ‘Disneyland for Adults’, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave the children behind. For many people, visiting wineries is only one day of their trip to San Francisco. After all, with all of the attractions it has to offer, the Bay Area is a great destination for the whole family. A daytrip to the scenic counties of Sonoma and Napa provides an opportunity to enjoy a relaxed pace with stunning views, wonderful tours and interesting wineries. The wineries and their gift shops are admittedly more interesting to the adults than the kids, but they will still enjoy the trip because it is, after all, farm country, and what kid doesn’t enjoy that? Sonoma especially takes great pride in their agricultural diversity, so as you travel around you’re going to see a wide variety of plantings, orchards and livestock in between the vineyards.

We’re seeing increasing numbers of children in Wine Country. While it is still a relatively small number, parents are finding ways to make it work. The secret to having a great time together in Sonoma and Napa is to realize that while many wineries are not suitable or enjoyable for children, there are many others that are. Sonoma and Napa have over seven hundred wineries, of which about half can be visited easily so there are plenty to choose from, as well as many other family attractions.

One of the most kid friendly and adult enjoyable destinations is the Plaza in downtown Sonoma.  If you’re coming from San Francisco over the Golden Gate Bridge you’ll be at this historic and charming place in a little over half an hour. This is the ‘Philadelphia of California’, because it is the place where the Republic of California declared its independence from Mexico.
It is helpful to know that there are the counties of Sonoma and Napa, and the cities of Sonoma and Napa.
Even though Sonoma is a small city of about nine thousand people, it is big on history. It is the only city in California that enjoys all three of these distinctions; it was an official Pueblo, or city under Mexico, it was a Franciscan Mission (the twenty-first and final), and it was the military headquarters for the entire West Coast under both Mexico and the United States. Around the Plaza, which is the largest in California, there are numerous historic sites as well as nice restaurants and shops. In the Plaza there are great picnic tables near the playgrounds and the newly restored duck pond.
The tourist bureau sits on the Plaza in an old Carnegie Library building and it can provide additional information for a great day with kids. A unique attraction called Train Town is just two minutes back down Broadway, the road that led you to the Plaza. This is a small old-style amusement park suitable for young children up to approximately age ten. There is a small train to ride and a traditional merry-go-round and it harkens back to a time before special effects were digital. There is even a petting zoo.

Around the Plaza are several winery tasting rooms where you can taste some excellent wines without spending all day getting there. Then you can nip back to the playground before moving on to the next winery. Five minutes from the Plaza is one of the Sonoma originals, the Sebastiani Family Winery, with their great old barrel room, one of Sonoma’s best gift shops and some very nice wines for you to sample. They also offer a trolley tour of Sonoma that explains about its wonderful history. Just to the south of town is the Larson Family Winery, on the old Sonoma Rodeo site. This was where the champion race horse Seabiscuit stabled overnight when he was racing on the West Coast. It has a farm-like setting with llamas and sheep. Horse rides through the vineyards can arranged in advance, bocce courts and picnic areas round out the experience.

From the Plaza you can head north on Route 12 up the Valley of the Moon, a scenic route. Voted Sonoma’s best tour, the Benziger Family Winery in Glen Ellen offers a wonderful mix of agriculture, education and fine wine. Their vineyards are tucked in a pretty little valley on Sonoma Mountain just down the road from Jack London’s old ranch, now a park.
Their tour, aboard a tram attached to the back of a tractor, winds its way up into the vineyards where they explain the biodynamic approach to agriculture, a remarkable system that is increasingly popular with many high-end wineries. Next you visit the barrel caves and finish up in the winery for a tasting. Admittedly wineries are about adult enjoyment, but there are often children on the Benziger tour and they always seem to enjoy themselves.

Please don’t make the mistake of bringing children to trendy wineries where they have nothing of interest for kids. They will spend the hour while you are tasting wine bored with nothing to do. The wineries that are kid friendly have made a big effort to be so. At both the Sonoma Plaza and Benziger you’ll find good picnic tables, so pick up some sandwiches either at the Plaza or at the Glen Ellen Market.

Many of the wineries in the Valley of the Moon are kid friendly as long as you have an adult willing to keep an eye on them. The grounds are gracious and park-like allowing for a little outdoor enjoyment in beautiful surroundings.  Some of those that come to mind are B.R. Cohn, Imagery, Landmark and St. Francis. Chateau St. Jean and Ledson Winery both have deli markets and picnic tables on site. They are all within five miles of each other along Route 12, the main road in the Valley. Hint: Bring a soccer ball or a Frisbee. There are some great lawns in the Valley of the Moon.

Visiting Napa with Children

Napa is a great place to visit because everything is close together. The whole valley is only thirty miles long by five miles wide, and while there are other wineries tucked up in the hills, the variety of wineries that are easy to reach is wonderful. However, it is not as agriculturally varied as Sonoma. Napa is another half hour farther from the Golden Gate Bridge, but the ride brings you through the beautiful Carneros district with its vineyard covered rolling hills that have a distinctly Tuscan feeling. Napa is closer to San Francisco via the less scenic Bay Bridge.

Napa has a bit more of a city style than its country cousin Sonoma, but there are several places that children will especially enjoy. Everyone enjoys spectacular architecture and great views, something at which Napa excels. A classic example of this is the Artesa Winery, with its hilltop site overlooking Carneros and the Bay. Artesa is close to San Francisco and despite not being built with children in mind, the feeling is relaxed enough and the variety of places to explore extensive enough that everyone in the family will be charmed. They even have an elevator for those with strollers.

Just to the north in Yountville is Domaine Chandon, one of Napa’s original makers of sparkling wine. This is a favorite for groups and people with children because the grounds are gracious and accommodating, with lawns, ponds and wildlife. Up on the patio, they offer snacks along with their elegant sparkling wines and the tables make it easier to keep everyone together. The springtime tadpole explosion in the ponds will keep any child entertained.

One of the most enjoyable family wineries is Francis Ford Coppola’s Rubicon in Rutherford, about half way up the Napa Valley on Highway 29 (St. Helena Highway). He took the historic Neibaum/Inglenook building and surrounded it with gardens that have all of the graciousness of a southern Italian villa. The exhibits and old barrel rooms upstairs are enough to entertain most children. During the summer they provide model sailboats to send gliding on the fountain pool in front of the building. There is a small caf?, with outdoor seating, a great gift shop and of course some wonderful wines.

Just to the north is the V. Sattui Winery which in this context is most valuable for their great deli offerings and large picnic area. Napa does not have a lot of picnic areas. On a Saturday in season it can get busy, but finding food, wine and picnic tables all together certainly makes the logistics of blending wineries with children much easier. The wineries have dramatically more traffic on Saturdays than Sundays.

The Wilds of Calistoga

For the San Francisco-based traveler, unfortunately, two of the most interesting wineries for children are all the way at the northern part of the valley, just south of the ‘old west’ style town of Calistoga, which is a great, kid-friendly place to visit onto itself. These two wineries are not suitable for infants in strollers, but for children eight years and older they are a fun experience. First is Sterling Vineyards, famous for its aerial tramway that carries visitors to its hilltop winery. Many years ago it was the first large winery to charge for their tastings. The price includes the tram ride. Between the tram, the gift shop and the tasting you need to allow an hour and a half to enjoy the place. Get there early to avoid the lines.

Just across Highway 29 is one of the newest, large wineries in Napa, although it was built to look old. The Castello di Amorosa is built like an authentic castle, from real stone and hand wrought iron. The vision, the forty million dollars and thirteen years it took to build produced a remarkable place. Children are restricted to the early morning tours so you should check their website for the schedule. The tour with tasting takes about two hours. The admission for Rubicon, Sterling and Castello di Amorosa all range between $20 and $25, although they offer discounts for children and young adults.

Napa gets hot in the summer, but very dry, so there are very few flying bugs. During the Winter it gets rainy, but not very cold. Both Spring and Fall are gorgeous, and harvest time, from late August through mid-November, is a very busy, exciting time in Wine Country.

Small, private wineries are often at people’s homes, so for the collector, traveling with children, you should ask your potential hosts if children are welcomed. If you want to get to the smaller wineries with children, consider hiring a guide with a car or SUV (avoid limos due to the need to sit sideways or backwards which increases the possibility of carsickness). While there are limo services in San Francisco, many of the experts live in Wine Country but they pick up clients in the city. Hiring a driver greatly reduces the stress and increases the enjoyment. Explain that you have children and ask them for a guide that is comfortable with that. Some guides are parents and actually like children. For them it’s something different and in fact we remember every tour we’ve ever done with kids. Touring with children is educational and a lot of fun, as long as you go to wineries that they’ll find interesting too. So enjoy your day with the kids in Wine Country.

Last Days of Birmingham Central Libraray http://balashiha.su/?p=5739 http://balashiha.su/?p=5739#respond Sat, 17 Apr 2010 06:25:37 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=5739 Last Days of Birmingham Central Libraray

For about three years it appeared that “The Friends of the Birmingham Central Library” ‘s campaign to save the old library was a successful one but as the news broke that it was not considered to be given the listed status, the dream turned to dust.

Birmingham Central Library, the current main library in the area was opened to the public in 1974 and is said to be the Europe’s largest public library. It is located in Chamberlain Square which is very convenient for access by all means of transportations. The library has always been controversial and attracted a lot of criticism and praise since before it was opened. In one of the most radical comments specially coming from a British, Charles, the prince of Wales pictured it “like a place where books are incinerated, not kept.” From the other side the building is described as the best example of Victorian and Edwardian construction which its true value has not been appreciated yet.

Ever since the rumors began that some high rank authorities are considering demolishing the Birmingham Central Library some of the brummies formed a campaign to prevent it. The hope for keeping the library rocked up when “English Heritage” made a favorable recommendation to the architecture minister, Margaret Hudge to the effect that the old library should be given a listed status.

Finally on 23 November, 2009 it came as a great shock to the campaigners that despite all their efforts and the advice of “English Heritage”, Hudge rolled out the expectations and undermined the building as “not of special architectural or historic interest.”

But it was not a sad day for everybody. The news, from the other side, was greatly welcomed by The Birmingham City Council and the majority of brummies for it paves the way for building the new super-library which is estimated to cost 195 million British pounds. Many praise the authorities just for having the audacity of suggesting such project amid one of the toughest recessions of century.

The construction of the new library will take about four years and thousands of jobs will be created. It is predicted that after a few months of opening it will turn into the busiest public place in Europe. It will be a flamboyant colossal structure with a vast area reserved for fashion stores, restaurant and supermarkets.

So before it is too late pack your bags and rush to Birmingham otherwise you might not get in time to be one of the last visitors of the good old library. But before getting on the plane or a train it would be a good idea to check out at least a few online resources for hotel reservation services and/or ticket booking.

There are so many great hotels and bed and breakfasts to choose from extra luxurious five star to economy and low price but convenient enough for a nice stay around soon to be “the place of old library”. A few of them are literary right around the corner of the Birmingham Central Library. Being just on the Paradise Circles accommodation and transport would be the list of a tourist’s worries.

Exhibits and Arts Close to Hotels in Brighton http://balashiha.su/?p=3223 http://balashiha.su/?p=3223#respond Wed, 07 Apr 2010 21:29:16 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=3223 Exhibits and Arts Close to Hotels in Brighton

Among the many hotels in Brighton are a few fantastic theaters offering live stage performances and movies. To begin, the Cinematheque offers you the chance to screen films that are within arthouse distribution and not so much on the mainstream of films. The Brighton Revue Company offers high quality theatrical productions year round, while the New Venture Theatre offers theatre acts with a professionalism not normally found in amateurs.

The Brighton Museum and Art Gallery sits in the city’s center, near many of the top rated hotels in Brighton in the Royal Pavilion. Exhibits are shown daily, year round and there is no charge to enter, with the exception of specific exhibits. The Booth Museum of Natural History was originally founded in 1874 by Edward Booth, and has exhibits on skeletons, bones, fossils as well as butterflies and live birds. There are many interactive exhibits and hands on opportunities at this museum, and there is no charge for entrance.

Preston Manor is settled on the outskirts of the city, about 10 minutes from the majority of hotels in Brighton. D?cor with Edwardian styles and elegant rooms, entrance fees are required. Escorted visits are allowed from April until September, Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:15 am until 4:15 pm and Sundays from 2:15 pm until 4:15 pm. There is no requirement for booking, but groups can book the manor from October until March. Concessions are available on site for a fee, and identification is required. The draw to the Manor is that so many believe it to be haunted. Tales of sightings of apparitions as well as supernatural occurrances have been told from the time it was built, and still are told today by those who have taken the Ghost Tours. There is a gift shop on site for those that want to take a piece of history home with them.

Also near many hotels in Brighton is the Brighton History Center. Admission is always free, and is open from Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am until 5 pm. On the first floor of the Brighton Museum, this is an ideal location to get all the information on places to see and visit in Brighton. From museums to library information on the city to genealogist information and military materials there is something for everyone to see. There is free internet access, photocopying opportunities as well as image reproduction services on site for a fee.
