The great thing about most Asian countries is that the food is delicious and cheap, and Malaysia is no different. Of course you can find McDonalds and Burger King if you are so inclined, but for a real good feed that is dirt cheap, head to the local hawkers. I haven’t really seen a western equivalent, but I guess it is like the restaurants we get in food courts, only they stand alone and don’t have entry door. Most are sheltered though with roofs and an open air door. You’ll know them when you see them, and they are everywhere. Most sell the same type of things but with slight differences depending on where the owner comes from, e.g. Halal, Chinese, Malaysian, Indian etc (halal won’t serve pork).

As a general tip, go to the ones that are packed with locals, however, certain stalls are ‘famous’ for certain foods. There is one in KK that is famous for boiled eggs. It is ALWAYS packed, but only serves bread, boiled eggs and drinks, and the eggs aren’t anything special (they’re just boiled eggs!) Apparently it has been running like this for over 40 years!

Now most of the ‘waitresses’ in these Hawkers don’t speak too much English so you will need to know how to order. Also, as I found out, you should specify exactly what you want otherwise you may get a few surprises. If the place your at is famous for their Birds Nest Soup, then that is what you’ll get in your soup unless you say ‘No Birds Nest Please” Below are a few useful words when ordering. I’m not to sure about the spelling so Ive spelled it phonetically, which is generally how things are spelled in Malay anyway.

Mee – Noodles
Mee Hoon – Thin Noodles
Mee Goreng – Fried Noodles
Mee Hoon Sup – Thin Noodle Soup
Daging Babi – Pork (Daging means meat)
Nasi – Rice
Ayam – Chicken
Nasi Ayam – Chicken Rice (A popular ‘take-away’ style meal)
Nasi Lemak – Another type of rice dish
Ikan – Fish
Perut – Stomach (Tripe)
Tidak – No
Sila – Please
Dilarang – Don’t
Saya Mao – I want
Saya tidak mao perut – I don’t want stomach
Sayur – Vegetables
Tandas – Toilet
Roti Canai – A pankake type bread dish usually served with some type of curry
Minum – Drink
Makan – Eat, Food
Minum Air – Drinking Water (Make sure it is bottled)
Kopi – Coffee
Gorang Manis – Less Sweet (Malays like sugar in their hot drinks, probably more than you are used to)
Te – Tea
Kopi Ping – Iced Coffee
Bir – Beer
ABC Special – A desert or snack type food usually consisting of jelly cubes, ice cream, mung beans and fruit, Try it if you see it on a menu

There isn’t too many words above but when it comes to food that’s about as much as I know. Everything else is just point at the menu and try your luck!

One more word that is not food related, and may not even be Malay (possibly Cadasan) is Aramati — It means ‘I FEEL GOOD!’

Bon Appetite!

P.S. Go visit Labuan, it is a small tax free island off KK. VB is cheaper there than it is in Australia! (VB is an Australian brand of beer)

How to Live the High Life in Phuket http://balashiha.su/?p=4959 http://balashiha.su/?p=4959#respond Fri, 01 Jul 2011 05:33:38 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=4959 How to Live the High Life in Phuket

You might think that Phuket is all about beaches and beer bars. Although at first you may not see it, Phuket has a social scene filled with trendsetters and the island’s well-to-do sorts. If you want to live the high life in Phuket, you have to follow the socialite trail and wine and dine in all the right places. Soon enough, you’ll become a familiar face and will be able to meet the right people, darling.

First of all, you have to look the part. We’re not talking sandals and Beer Chang vests here. Phuket’s social butterflies are snappy dressers. If you want to fit in, ditch those tired clothes and head to Central Festival or Jungceylon to buy yourself some new threads.

When it comes to dining out, Phuket’s butterflies flutter to a variety of places. Baba Dining Lounge at Sri Panwa has been vogue for a while thanks to its secluded location, snazzy d?cor and a great menu. The owner is something of a familiar face around the island, so there are regular parties at Sri Panwa where people go to drink, dance and mingle.

Another popular haunt at the moment is White Box just before Kamala Hill. White Box is a jazzy restaurant that has great views out over Patong Bay. It’s a little out of the way for tourists, so it’s generally only frequented by Phuket’s socializing residents. White Box also hosts a number of parties with the music policy focused on hip hop or house.

Another hip restaurant is Ratri Jazztaurant in Kata. The steep climb up a hill is worthwhile because of the magical views you’re treated to from the restaurant. Great food and jazz music make for the perfect combination.

On the subject of parties, if you want to be seen in all the right places, you’re going to have to closely follow the party circuit. BYD Lofts is a chilled-out place at the Club Andaman Resort. It’s a great spot to grab a bite to eat and a few drinks while listening to the live music. A lot of people visit BYD before heading to Club Lime.

Club Lime is just about the hippest venue in Phuket. The music ranges from house and electro to techno and breaks. Don’t expect to hear any pop or cheesy dance tunes. At weekends, people dance the nights away at Club Lime until well into the morning. The drinks are expensive and there’s usually a cover charge. The venue looks fabulous, however, and it attracts a fashionable crowd from week to week.

If you want to win some kudos points with the “it” crowd, you’re going to need to find a way to get into the island’s biggest parties, which usually happen as part of Phuket Raceweek and the King’s Cup Regatta. The final party of the King’s Cup is always particularly memorable. Making friends in the right places will help you get invited to Phuket’s many parties throughout the year.

Avoid Crowded Costa’s & Discover Secret Spain http://balashiha.su/?p=1025 http://balashiha.su/?p=1025#respond Sun, 12 Jun 2011 15:10:14 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=1025 Avoid Crowded Costa’s & Discover Secret Spain

Anyone considering a summer holiday this year may be put off by the thought of a crowded beach on a Spanish Costa or the over familiarity of resorts packed with British tourists. However, there are areas of Spain that are not over-populated by tourists and offer beaches unspoilt by the masses.

The Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light) on the sandy shores of the Atlantic in the South Western corner of Spain promises an alternative to the commercialised Mediterranean resorts. Stretching from Tarifa near Gibraltar to the border of the Algarve, The Costa de la Luz is a particular favourite with the Spanish. In fact you may find yourself longing for company as you stroll along the near deserted and tranquil beaches.

With restrictions on development meaning many of the beaches remain unspoilt, Costa de la Luz holidays enjoy a notably Andalucian atmosphere with a strong flamenco tradition and extraordinary carnivals and religious processions. Holidays on the Costa de la Luz feature superb Andalucian cuisine with tapas bars and superior fish and seafood far outweighing more predictable tourist menus.

The combination of sandy beaches, friendly locals and great food make Costa de la Luz holidays a wonderful experience and one yet to be exposed on a large scale. However this is not to say it does attract a number of discerning holidaymakers with the insight to appreciate what is on offer, namely the near perfect windsurfing conditions and the world class surfing.

Although the attractive beaches are vast and often seem deserted, they are also within reach of some of Europe’s most fascinating cities meaning you can be in touch with the best of both worlds. This particular area of Andalucia is populated by historic cities rich in culture and tradition such as Cadiz, Seville and Jerez, or beautiful hilltop towns like Vejer and Arcos. One minute you can be strolling along a deserted beach, the next you can be exploring the charismatic Andalucian cities. An excellent example, Tarifa boasts a labyrinth of boutiques, surf shops, terraced cafes and restaurants dotted around the streets which wind up towards the late-Gothic 15th century church of San Mateo and a great castle overlooking the town. Tarifa also boasts an impressive nightlife with its many bars and clubs encouraging a growing reputation as the ‘new Ibiza’ or the ‘Malibu of Europe’.

Other holidaymakers are drawn by the more relaxing pursuits of walking, bird watching and horse riding or simply soaking up the Spanish sun. In fact, the Costa de la Luz is a magnet for birdwatchers. Between Cadiz and Southern Portugal is Europe’s largest wildlife sanctuary, the Coto Donanan National Park, which is home to an unprecedented number of bird species. This corner of Spain is also one of the most historic, ranging from the 2nd century BC Roman site of Baela Claudia, about 9 miles north of Tarifa, hosting numerous temples and a restored theatre carved out of the side of a hilltop. Another nearby picturesque town, Vejer de la Fontera, sits high upon the hills with a 16 century church and a delightful Spanish plaza incorporating spectacular views.

For those tired of commercialised Spanish holidays, the Costa de la Luz literally gives an insight into traditional Spain and has an array of attractions to match rival holiday resorts within the other Costas. The only difference is that for now, it is left relatively untouched, also meaning there are chances to find cheaper deals. directline-holidays.co.uk combine an efficient search facility using all the major tour operators with the ease to book online or over the phone to find a perfect Costa de la Luz holiday. Other recommended resorts in the Costa de la Luz include Chipiona which is close to Jerez and popular with discerning locals from Cadiz and Seville. For holidays closer to the Cadiz region, directline-holidays.co.uk offer Nova Sancti Petri holidays, a secluded beach resort with excellent golf and water sports facilities.

Enjoy Florida’s Culturally Diverse Food http://balashiha.su/?p=3064 http://balashiha.su/?p=3064#respond Sun, 12 Jun 2011 08:00:40 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=3064 Enjoy Florida’s Culturally Diverse Food

Florida’s Gulf and Atlantic coasts and its inland waters serve up a mouth-watering menu of marine cuisine. Depending on the time of year and where you are, you can dine on Apalachicola oysters, Fernandina Beach shrimp, St. Johns River blue crabs, Florida Bay lobsters, and Cedar Key clams, Grouper, mahi-mahi, largemouth bass, speckled perch, and trout.

For Starters – here are a few;

Conch Chowder – a creamy soup made with conch (a giant sea snail). Conch live in those shells that some of you buy in souvenir shops, take back home, put it to your ear and think that you can hear the ocean.

The two most common ways conch is prepared is in chowder or fried.

U-Peel-Shrimp

This is a dish consisting of shrimp cooked in a spicy broth.

Some Main Course dishes

Seared Tuna may be served with a mango salsa and grilled chayote (a type of squash). For the mango salsa; Fresh mangoes are blended with herbs, spices and scotch bonnet peppers for mild heat.

Chicken Tropicana This is a chicken dish with tropical fruit sauce, coconut and cashews. Dessert.

Key Lime Pie – you cannot mention Florida desserts without mentioning this Florida Signature dessert.

Key Lime Pie is filled with a tangy custard made from Key lime juice, sweetened condensed milk, eggs, and sugar. The pie is named after the small Key limes that are found throughout the Florida Keys.

Key lime juice is yellow, not green – so if it is green it is not authentic. To sample a day’s worth of Cuban delights (Cuban cuisine is a fusion of Spanish, African and Caribbean cuisine), begin at breakfast with a wedge of hot, buttered, Cuban bread with a cup of caf

? con leche — this is strong coffee with a some milk.

Other choices include frijoles negros (black beans), arroz con pollo (chicken and yellow rice), boliche (a beef roast, stuffed with chorizo sausage), Cuban mojo-roast pork, arroz salteado (salted rice), and deviled crab with hot sauce. Feast your eyes and stomach on a heaping dish of paella — rice mixed with a profuse amount of delights that may include mussels, clams, shrimp, scallops, lobster, oysters, stone-crab claws, chicken, and/or pork.

To finish off, try flan, egg custard oozing with caramel sauce. Then go back to your Florida Vacation Rental Home and have a well earned rest.

Some Tips for Healthy Eating at Universal Studios http://balashiha.su/?p=7835 http://balashiha.su/?p=7835#respond Thu, 02 Jun 2011 22:27:13 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=7835 Some Tips for Healthy Eating at Universal Studios

Fatty hamburgers, oily fries, and greasy pizza—when you’re on a vacation, you cannot help but stuff yourself with these scrumptious and convenient but unhealthy food. It is not any different if you are visiting a world-renowned theme park like Universal Studios. Chances are, you will be exposed to various kinds of unhealthy food during your vacation to this place. But because your health is important whether you are on a vacation or not, here are some tips for healthy eating at this popular theme park.

1.         Bring your Own Food

This first tip is advantageous not only for healthy eating purposes but also to save you money. Bringing your own lunch and snacks would ensure that you are able to stay away from junk foods that are all over the place. Pack healthy snacks such as fruit juice, power bars, sandwiches, and veggie munchies.

2.         Look for Healthy Restaurants

Eating out does not have to mean eating unhealthy foods. All over Orlando, many restaurants serve nutritious dishes. If this means that you need to go out of the theme park to eat, then do so. Here are some of the best choices.

•           Crispers – Don’t be fooled by the name. Usually, crispy food is unhealthy fried food. However, this soup and salad chain actually offers healthy eats such as gourmet sandwiches, amazing wraps, tasty soups, salads with fresh ingredients and fat free dressings. In the menu, choose vegetarian dishes marked with a little red tomato symbol.

•           Ming Court – Healthy Chinese food is the specialty of this casual restaurant, which is flocked by tourists and locals alike. For freshly prepared stir-fry and delectable sushi, be sure to drop by this place for a round of healthy lunch or dinner.

•           Red Bamboo Thai Restaurant – Located on the International Drive, this healthy Thai restaurant is the perfect place to eat your lunch or dinner. Don’t miss their tofu and vegetable medley with spicy Thai curry sauce. If you’re looking for something a bit toned down, you can go for the heavy-on-the-appetite steamed meet and vegetable dishes with light seasoning and served with rice.

•           Salt Island Chophouse & Fish Market – People who crave for seafood should certainly head over this restaurant, which offers a wide assortment of healthy seafood platters such as grilled scallops, garlic shrimp, and grilled fish.

3.         Stay away from junk food

Temptation to eat junk food is hard to resist. But you can if you make it a goal to avoid these kinds of foods at all cost with the right motivation. Not only are they unhealthy, they also won’t provide you with the energy you need to do all the activities lined up for your vacation.

Healthy eating is possible even in a place like the Universal Studios. Just make sure that you find healthy restaurants, bring your own food, and stay away from junk food. To make sure that you really have a good time, consider availing Universal Orlando Packages that will make planning a cinch. Universal Orlando Packages can be purchased online but you need to find a reputable travel website to provide you with the best rate and service possible.

Tips for Saving While Eating Out With Family http://balashiha.su/?p=8931 http://balashiha.su/?p=8931#respond Wed, 23 Feb 2011 10:08:07 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=8931 Tips for Saving While Eating Out With Family

The plans have been made. Snacks and meals have been packed. Everything that needs to be done to help you save on your vacation has been done. Only now the kids want to eat out. Instead of fighting the tide, look around for one of the many deals that are offered for families during the week.

1. Applebee’s – this family chain has a lot of variety to meet all the tastes your group might have. Even better, on Tuesdays and Thursdays in most locations they offer Kids Meals (off the kid menu) for only $.99.

2. Captain D’s – It’s a great little seafood place and an even better way to save a little cash while you are on vacation. Call the local restaurant and see if they offer the “kids eat free” deal at that location. On Thursdays you can get to free kid’s meals for every adult meal purchased, but it is DINE IN only.

3. IHOP – There are so much more than pancakes available here – although pancakes are a specialty. The great thing is that on Fridays (from 3 pm – 9 pm) the kids eat free with the purchase of an adult meal.

4. Chik-fil-A – The cows are thrilled when you chose to eat here. And to encourage you even further, your kids can eat free on Tuesdays.

5. O’Charleys – This is another great variety restaurant and kids can eat free here every day (from the children’s menu). Keep in mind that drinks come separate and will run around $2.

6. McDonalds – under the golden arches you can find kids meals for under $1 on Tuesdays.

7. Ruby Tuesdays – You can find a wide variety of entr?e’s and some great prices as well. To make it even more budget friendly, you can get a free kid’s meal (with adult purchase) on Wednesday nights.

Eating out doesn’t have to cost a fortune. You can cut corners by cutting coupons or you can visit your local restaurants on nights when the kids can eat free. There are some things you should always keep in mind:

• Not all restaurants in the chain will participate in the programs, so call your nearest location before you go.

• Kids Eat Free deals are not usually advertised very aggressively and are more likely to be found through word of mouth. Do some research on line AND be sure to ask friends and family about any deals they have heard of.

• Local or regional restaurants often run weekly specials. Call around to see what you can find to fit your family’s budget.

Is a Vacation Too Expensive for your Tiny Budget http://balashiha.su/?p=5403 http://balashiha.su/?p=5403#respond Fri, 04 Feb 2011 04:37:09 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=5403 Is a Vacation Too Expensive for your Tiny Budget?

Mounting fuel costs have made travel more expensive than it used to be. A few cost-saving measures can help you to have a great vacation – even on a limited budget.

Hydration Economics

If you have done any research, you know that you shouldn’t drink local water when you travel. However, bottled water can take a significant chunk out of your wallet. Stock up on water at a discount department store before you leave. If you travel frequently, you might want to invest in reusable water bottles. Fill them at home, and take as much store-bought water as you can as well – while remaining within baggage weight restrictions. Check airline restrictions on liquids if you will be travelling by air.

Local Currency Exchange

You will always get the best exchange rates if you use a credit card or ATM machine. Alternatively, you can exchange money in a bank. Local stores and money changers are not likely to give you a good exchange rate. Sometimes their charges are exorbitant. An added plus for credit card purchases is the neatly organized statement you will have when you get back home.

Never Fly with Overweight Luggage

Always – always – always – be aware of airline weight restrictions. Sometimes they are very limiting. You can check the internet for specific regulations. Use a good scale to weigh your baggage (then reweigh) before you leave for the airport. Overweight luggage can be very expensive.

The Best Time to Travel

Avoid travel on weekends or during peak tourism season. The definition of ‘peak season’ will vary by country and hemisphere. Accommodations and tickets will be more expensive when everyone else wants to travel. Look for off season deals and discounts. If you’re not sure when off season is, find a bed and breakfast in your destination city and look at their website. They will probably have a range of rates that changes according to season.

Food is Expensive

Save money on meals by staying at a bed and breakfast. Free breakfast fare can range from continental to a full, hot-cooked meal with a multi-choice menu. (Some inns also have packages that include lunch and supper.) Conserve further by picking up lunch supplies at a local grocery store. Inexpensive suppers are available at McDonalds (with branches in over 100 countries).

Kids have Big Appetites

If you have kids, try to find a hotel with a ‘kids stay and eat free’ program. Some bed and breakfasts have packages for kids. However, many do not allow young children.

Barter with the Airlines

Use the internet to research airfares. Find the best deals and make printouts. Purchase your tickets through the cheapest website, or contact the airline’s toll-free number. If they don’t offer a matching fare, ask them to meet or beat the internet price. You may have to fax a printout or two – but it will be well worth the savings.

Cash, Student, and Corporate Discount Rates

Be sure to carry student or corporate ID with you. You may be eligible for a discount. (10% to 15% discounts are common.) Present your ID or business card at check-in and ask for a rate reduction. Small inns and hotels may be willing to offer a discount if you pay via cash instead of credit card. Credit card processing fees for a small company may run around 5%.

You are in Control

Seize the opportunity, research your options, and have a great worry-free vacation!

Memphis Barbeque – One Week in Hog Heaven http://balashiha.su/?p=6248 http://balashiha.su/?p=6248#respond Thu, 25 Nov 2010 06:24:36 +0000 http://balashiha.su/?p=6248 Memphis Barbeque – One Week in Hog Heaven

I am a big Barbeque Nut. So one of my favorite towns to visit on Earth is Memphis, Tennessee. The home of the Blues is also the home of some sweet Memphis BBQ.

There is nothing else quite like sinking your teeth into the smokey goodness of the melt-in-your-mouth ribs at Charlie Vergo’s Rendezvous or relishing the Blues-backed tangy sauces on Beale Street. If you live for good barbecue it’s hard to go wrong in Memphis because there is a great restaurant on almost every corner. Your hardest problems you will have will be deciding were to start, where to go next and not wanting to leave.

Here are my can’t-miss picks for Memphis BBQ Heaven if you have a week to eat in the hometown of “the King”.

I’d suggest beginning at the most storied of all of Memphis barbecue restaurants, Charlie Vergo’s Rendezvous. You enter the restaurant from an alley that’s full of heavenly smells of smoking pork and customers waiting to get a seat. How can you not love a world famous barbecue joint that’s in an alley? The ‘Vous is known for it’s “dry ribs” that use only a spicy barbecue rub and no sauce. Not to worry if you love barbecue sauce — a cold drink of beer with each bite will work just nicely.

The Rendezvous is in midtown near the world famous Peabody Hotel. Head a couple of blocks south to “The Home of the Blues”, Beale Street, and you will find several more excellent restaurants to try. Sitting right across the street from each other at the entrance to Beale are B B King’s and Blues City Cafe. Both serve tangy sweet, sauce covered ribs and pulled pork with a backdrop of some of the best blues music you’ll ever hear. Both restaurants feature full menus, ranging from tamales to catfish. But who cares — we’re here to eat barbecue!

Up the road a bit, past the Elvis stores, the Blues bars and Fed-Ex Forum, you’ll find Silky O’Sullivan’s. Don’t let the Irish name fool you. Mr. O’Sullivan knows his barbecue. Start your meal with a plate of BBQ Nachos then get down to serious eating with a rack of the ribs. Just be careful with the “Diver!”

Getting out of the city, don’t miss Corky’s and Interstate. Even though both places have gone “chain” and are apt to be full of tourists, both have excellent barbecue and you can pick up a bottle or two of their sauce to take home with you.

On the last night of your stay treat yourself with a trip to the place where the locals go when they want barbecue, Cozy Corner. Michael Stern of “Roadfood” says, “If you have time for just one barbecue meal in Memphis (or anywhere on earth), go to Cozy Corner.” The specialties of this down-home joint are barbequed cornish game hens, barbecued spaghetti and barbequed baloney. All three have to be tried to be believed.

That’s one week’s worth of Memphis barbecue for a normal person to try or about a day and a half’s worth for the true barbecue Fan. But even if you eat barbecue for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you can get your fill in Memphis.
