If you are visiting the Texas city of Houston, be ready to kick up your boots because there is plenty to do in this Southern part of Texas. Some of the annual events in Houston that are open to the public include the following.

Southwestern Music Festival

Houston lets its southwestern roots be known at the Southwestern Music Festival held at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for the first weekend in March of every year. The Southwestern Music Festival usually features up and coming artists that play western music. Each year, different acts are scheduled to appear at this unique music festival.

Great Gatsby Days

Great Gatsby Days honor F. Scott Fitzgerald and take place during the last weekend of March every year. This is somewhat of a Spring time festival and takes place at the Gatsby Social Club. Although the Gatsby Social Club was not founded after the hero in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, the club began hosting Great Gatsby Days during the late 1970s when the film of the same name hit the screen. It features the music of the 1920s as well as dancing contests and is something unique in the heart of Houston.

Houston Barbeque Fest

The Houston Barbeque Festival features barbeque foods such as ribs and chicken as well as other meats. Chefs prepare for this barbeque festival each year that also contests home made barbeque sauces. Barbeque sauces are judged by hottest, spiciest and sweetest. There is also an award for the best all around barbeque sauce. This occurs during the last weekend of June of each year at the Main Street Park.

Southwestern Food Festival

There are a lot of food and music festivals in Houston. Not only is this Texas city a place to get great barbeque, but it is also a place where you can get terrific Tex-Mex Food. At the Southwestern Food Festival, you can sample the unique Tex Mex cuisine. Tex-Mex food is a combination of Mexican and Western style foods. There are plenty of ways to satisfy your palate at this event that takes place during the first weekend of August each year at the Main Street Park.

Houston Film Festival

During the first two weeks of September each year, the Houston Film Festival convenes at the Angelika Film Center and Caf? in downtown Houston. Although this event does not rank on the same level as the Sundance Film Festival, it is a film festival that draws a crowd to the theater and generally features films with a southwestern theme.

Main Street Christmas Walk

Houston, unlike other major US cities, has a Main Street. Main Street is filled with older homes that have a certain charm to them and have been part of Houston for well over a hundred years. These homes are decorated for the holidays and you can participate in the Christmas Walk, although you may not feel like hot chocolate during this walk that occurs during the two weekends prior to Christmas. This is one way for you to get to see inside some of the most historic homes in town decorated with southwestern flair.

Houston is a city that is warm most of the year and comes alive with southwestern culture. From the food to the music, you will notice that this culture is sprinkled into all of the Houston annual events so do dro pby if you want some southwestern comfort!
