Choosing a Marina for a Motor Boat

General

Marinas can be found in harbours, ports or on river waterfronts. These marinas can accommodate a variety of boats, including motorboats, sailboats, fishing boats, cruise ships and yachts, as well as the house boat. Some marinas cater to cruise boats on a large scale while others operate on a smaller scale, accommodating motorboats and sailboats. The Reeds Almanac is a good starting point when choosing a marina for a motor boat in the U.K. alternatively listings of marinas near you can also be found in the phone book or online. If you’re already a proud owner of a motor boat then check to see that they have the marine fuel needed e.g. red diesel, petrol or LPG.

Location

First step is to start by considering the marina’s location in relation to your home, or perhaps even airport. For someone who intends to do a great deal of the maintenance themselves frequent journeys to the marina are going to mean you want to be very close to the marina. If the boat is placed in winter storage, can you drive to the marina, carry out the maintenance in a day? If the answer is no then you’ll need to book accommodation or find a nearer marina.

What to look for – facilities

  • Full maintenance and 24 hour security.
  • Electricity on the pontoon.
  • Water on the pontoon.
  • Diesel, Petrol or LPG available.
  • Crane hoist capacity
  • Visitors berths.
  • Free car parking.
  • Berthing – check for length restrictions.
  • Full PDI.
  • Dry stack storage.
  • Changing and showering.
  • Launderette.
  • 12 month access.
  • Full chandlery
  • Pump-out facilities
  • Cafe or restaurant.

Is living aboard required and if so is it allowed?

The above checks can be done over the phone, but when choosing from several marinas, it’s best to visit the marinas in person and tour them all. Meet the operations manager / harbourmaster and gain an impression of how well the marina is run and how professional are the staff.

Many marinas are running at full capacity in southern England and berth space is limited so ask if there how long is the waiting list which may be several years long. Also ask where the berth will be beforehand and check there will be sufficient storage space ashore in winter for working on planned maintenance.

Cost

Terms of Payment can vary from marina to marina as can the berthing charges, as with everything in life shop around and try to negotiate where possible on the whole berth agreement.

Tips on Wine Tasting Etiquette

Many people, especially first time visitors to Wine Country, don’t know what to expect at a wine tasting. We’re often asked for tips and are pleased offer our advice to help clients get the most out of their first wine tasting experience.
Eat breakfast: One that contains protein, fat and complex carbs. This ensures that your blood sugar levels will stay steady and you’ll maintain your tasting endurance.
Don’t wear lipstick: The oils cling to fine crystal and distort the taste of the wine.
Don’t wear strong scents: Wearing strong perfume or after shave lotion to the winery is definitely a faux pas. Strong aromas overpower the delicate bouquet of the wine and also affect the taste buds. The one wearing the scent will probably not be as affected as those around them so be polite.
Anticipate a tasting fee: Although there are wineries who let you taste for free, most wineries have tasting fees that range from $5 to $25 per person. Some are waived with a wine purchase and some include a complimentary souvenir glass.
Wear sensible shoes: Wineries are more or less farms and you are likely to be doing some walking around the grounds or just on stone driveways to get to the entrance.
Don’t overdress: Wine Country Casual means that you can never look too good, you just don’t want to look too formal. Napa and Sonoma are typically ten degrees warmer than San Francisco but bring a jacket for those cave tours. Some high-end restaurants request a jacket but never a tie.
Plan ahead: If you really want to enjoy every drop of wine, consider hiring a guide. Leaving the driving and mapping of your route to experts saves you time, effort and a DUI. (They ‘re really serious about that out here in Wine Country!)
Most importantly, relax and have a good time! Armed with these simple tips, you will be so well prepared to enjoy the true beauty of wine country in comfort that no one will guess it’s your first time.

Feeling & Looking Glamorous While Traveling

There was a time when traveling was glamorous. When ocean liners still crossed the Atlantic with nightly ballroom dances and men donned a suit and tie to fly. Fast forward to our present day of roaming backpackers and jam packed tour buses and one might secretly long for a bygone era. Luckily there are a few tricks of the trade to adding a little glamour to your next trip without sacrificing your comfy in flight sweat pants.

• Stock up on Samples—prior to traveling, swing buy any beauty or makeup counter for samples of beauty products, skin care & perfume samples. In place of your full sized drugstore anti wrinkle cream, you now have a free small portable 7 day sample of an owe so expensive department store cream.

• Indulge in Decedent Chocolate—every airport duty shop is filled with stores that sell the specified country’s national gourmet chocolate. Pick up a piece or two,, and when your fellow air passengers are eyeing their unidentified lump that suffices as desert in the land of airplane food—whip out your gold wrapped chocolates and enjoy.

• An Elegant Pen—invest in a nice pen, you will find you use it often—postcards home, immigration forms, journal entries, etc. and a classy pen is much more pleasurable to use than the old BIC pen buried at the bottom of your purse.

• Duty Free Shop—feeling a little travel worn at the airport, head to the nearest duty free shop—try out the lotions, makeup, perfume and every other beauty product known to man. You’ll kill some time, freshen up your look and board the plane feeling like a million bucks.

• In Flight Reviver—ask anyone who has just gotten of an overseas flight what they want to do, and they will inevitable say “take a shower”. Combat, or at least postpone this overwhelming desire by packing baby wipes in your carry on bag. Shortly before the plane begins its decent (and getting up from your seat becomes a no-no) head to the restroom and give yourself a quick “bath” with your baby wipes. Wash your face and wipe as much as your body down as you can manage in the confines of the airplane bathroom.

• Fresh Flowers Weekly—for the price of a latte or two you can have a pleasurable addition to your hotel.

• Red Lipstick is a Must—light, bright, dark or pale—find your shade of red and never leave home without it.

• A Sparkle or Two—a distinctive piece of jewelry or two can take any outfit from road rumpled to casual chic.

• Silk Scarves—how to the Europeans manage to look so pulled together even in the dead of winter? It’s the well worn scarf, it dresses up any outfit while still keeping you toasty warm.

• Evian Facial Water—work past your qualms about paying for water in a bottle, and pick up a travel sized spray bottle of Evian water. You will be amazed at how refreshing it feels in hot weather, and your makeup will not smudge or budge as is the case of a quick splash of water from a sink.

• Arrange an Airport Pick Up—shell out a few extra dollars and arrange to have a car service waiting for you when you get off the plane. Seeing a driver awaiting with a sign with your name on it makes life not only a little more glamorous, but easy and reassuring as well.

Hotels And Villas In Orlando Florida

Orlando, Florida is a tourist’s dream as the location boasts so many things to do and see in the vicinity. Flights are easily accessible to fly to Orlando International Airport but if wanted, Tampa International Airport is situated approximately 1 hour and 15 minute drive away. Alternatively, Jacksonsville International Airport is approximately 2 hours away. Some people actually choose to fly into one of the airports and fly out of another just so they can add a side trip to a beach destination on their Orlando vacation.

The Orlando area is packed full of hotels, Inns, and Villa rentals. There is surely one to fit within your travel budget. It is recommended that you research what you want to do whilst you’re on your Orlando vacation, so that you position your Orlando hotel or villa as close as possible. Due to the amount of attractions available to visitors, Orlando draws in visitors from all over the globe all year round. This means that travelling can be quite heavy, especially during peak times.

For example, if you think you will spend most of your time in Disney World, try to book a property as close as possible or on-site. The commute for an Orlando area hotel or villa is just 5 miles away but could be 20 minutes or more depending upon traffic. Some of the hotels that are close offer shuttle service to the parks. This can save you a lot of money as you may not need to rent a car.

There are many options in the lower price range. These are placed in the 2 – 3 star range of hotels and inn’s. In the mid range, 3 – 4 star properties are available and for just a little bit more, you can reside in a 4 – 5 star property. Deluxe Orlando Villas rentals are also available where you might even have your own private pool or tennis court.

If possible, try to look for a property that has either a full breakfast or a mini-kitchen in the room. Some of the breakfast buffets are quite extensive and can fill you up therefore you will not need such a big lunch. Having basic cooking facilities in your room, such as a microwave, coffee pot, and refrigerator, can help keep costs down. You can purchase some groceries at a local store and have breakfast and snacks in your own room. Some people even make sandwiches each morning to bring with them to the parks. No matter which accommodation suits you, you will have a great time for your next Orlando holiday. Orlando is a town that is crammed with attractions and seems to be made for tourists to have fun and bring out their inner child.

CHARDHAM YATRA

CHARDHAM YATRA

One Expression around which all religions base their preaching. Peace of mind, body and soul. Since time immemorial both man and God have just one prayer – Shanti – for the living and the Departed. The Char Dham, also called the Deo Bhumi – The Adobe of the Gods – presents just the ambience where the Divine & the Sublime coexist.
Once there, the sheer magnificence and the tranquil beauty so immerses you into a world of spirituality that you experience true peace and humility. Nature in all its splendour, at once huge and overwhelming and yet humble in its exquisite beauty – the pilgrimage to the Char Dhams is the experience that will stay with you and beyond.
The Holy Himalayas :
The Himalayas – the world’s most majestic & loftiest mountain chain, is the global heritage of all mankind. The sublime quality of this “Adobe of Snows’ has, since time immemorial, inspired the sages & saints of India and has attracted tourists & pilgrims from world over to its awesome beauty & calm serenity. Uttaranchal abounds in places of sanctity where devotees converge every year to pay obeisance to their Gods braving vagaries of weather & other human travails in Himalaya. Closest to the celestial beings, devotees from all corners of the country have flocked to these Himalayan shrines of Char Dham – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath & Badrinath yatra every year to seek salvation. The arduous trails remain in the ancient sanctuaries of faith for a fulfilling experience. The four dhams receive holy water in the form of four streams – Yamuna (Yamunotri), Bhagirathi (in Gangotri), Mandakini (in Kedarnath) and Alaknanda (in Badrinath)

Badrinath Dham is one of the oldest of Hindu places of worship. On the right bank of the river Alaknanda lies the sacred shrine perched at an altitude of 3133 m above sea level, guarded on either side by the two mountain peaks Nar & Narain with the towering Neelkanth peak providing a splendid back-drop. Also known as the Vishal Badri, the largest among the five Badris, it is revered by all as the apt tribute to Lord Vishnu.
The revered spot was once carpeted with wild berries which gave it the name ‘Badri Van’ meaning ‘forest of berries.’ Built by Adi Shankaracharaya, the philosopher-saint of the 8th century, the temple has been renovated several times due to damage by avalanches and restored in the 19th century by the royal houses of Scindia & Holkar. The main entrance gate is colourful & imposing popularly known as Singhdwar. References to Sri Badrinath have been made in the Vedas & perhaps it was a popular shrine during the Vedic age also. The Skand Purana gives an accvount of the Adiguru consecrating the idol of Lord Badri Vishal in the temple after recovering it from Narad Kund, in a pursuance of a divine call from heaven. The idol is made of black stone similar to granite. So holy is the shrine that it forms one of the four prominent places of Hindu worship. The epic Mahabharat, it is believed, was composed in the Vyas & ganesh caves close by. The Vishnu Ganga which later becomes the Alaknanda flows below the temple. Almost 3 km north of Badrinath, mana is the last Indian village before the Tibetan border. The Vasudhara falls are quite spectacular. On the closing day the residents of Mana offer a choli to the deity to cover the diety all the winter. It is taken off on the opening day & its fibres are distributed amongst the Yatris (pilgrims) as a maha prasadam. Joshimath is the winter deity of Badrinath.
The temple opens every year in the month of April-May & closes for winters in the third week of November. Badrinath’s four subsidiary Badris include Bhavishya Badri, Yogdhyan Badri, Bridha Badri and Adi badri. It is popularly believed that with spread of Buddhism, the Buddhists enshrined the statue of Lord Buddha there and during the Hindu renaissance, the statue of Buddha was later restored by Adi Guru as the idol of Vishnu. This possibly explains the deity sitting in Padmasan posture, typical of Buddha icons. However, also according to Hindu mythology, Buddha was considered to be the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
