It Won’t Happen to You….or Will It?

That’s exactly how quick it was, as quick as a flash, before I know what had happened, it had happened….only to discover a few hours later, on the last day of a wonderful holiday on the idyllic Seychelles islands, every photo taken, every attempt at recording a memory lust to a lowly beach criminal.
You laugh? It wouldn’t happen to you, you are careful, aware and street wise, so was I. Walking along a popular short cut from our accommodation to the dive school, we were approached by a local trying to entice us to take a trip on a dugout to a nearby island. While pointing to the dugout he friendly put his arm around my shoulder. Now, hindsight is an exact science, after the fact I recall my small backpack being moved a little but out this down to his arm.
We had no interest whatsoever with his proposal and the whole incident must have taken a little under two minutes at the most, that’s all he needed to unclip the opening of the small daypack, slip his hand inside and help himself to what could only have obviously been a camera. Believe me when I tell you, my wife nearby didn’t notice a thing, I didn’t suspect and we are both “travel wise”, careful to secure all straps and/or not leave luggage or any item unattended, careful not to go into places or areas that look too quiet, careful to stick to proper paths and keep an eye out for suspicious individuals. After all, when every other thought prevails we’re South Africans and respecting one’s security is part of our daily lives.
A few years back, sitting on a small wall over looking a beach in Nice along the French Riviera, I had placed a similar day-pack along the wall until a gypsy, looking out for an opportunistic moment, grabbed the bag and made a run for it…being a little more agile in those days, the gypsy had picked on the wrong South Africa….sensing the movement I immediately gave chases, he bobbed and weaved through the traffic, glancing behind him to see if he was notice, I am sure to this day I saw the colour of his face change when he saw me, a solid six foot of anger after him…he glanced again after reaching the other side of the road to see that I wasn’t giving up, matching him for speed and motivated by anger and frustration…he dropped the bag and sped into the crowd, after a quick up, at least as good as any top eighth man playing on the Super 14 might have done, I looked up again and he was gone. With my chest held high, albeit with a wheeze or two I stumbled back to my wife, bag in hand and very proud.
Going back to the Seychelles incident, the matter was reported to the local constabulary, the thief identified by us after staking out the area where we were robbed and then questioning waiters in a nearby restaurant who new him. He was approached and questioned and denied ever seeing us, of course the camera, what camera? Even after suggesting we would drop the charges and pay a reward of two hundred dollars for the camera and/or the memory card, our memories captured on disc for our whole holiday were gone.
Whether you are being fleeced by a ticket tout at a West End theatre in London, buying a top seat for a top dollar and finding out you are sitting on the roof, or whether you are having an item stolen or being ripped of with so-called water whereas it’s merely a home made re-fill from the local water system, be aware and be wary, here are a few security tips that might apply during your travels:
• Keep a copy of all important documents in a different case or bag than the original; if one is lost or stolen you at least have some record.
• For the same reason, split your travellers cheques, cash and perhaps credit cards into at lease two different bags or person, in this way you’ll never be absolutely helpless.
• It’s the small valuable items the thieves love the most, they’re easy to convert into cash…cell phones; camera’s; binoculars; wallets…be aware and ensure these are in a secure location, pockets or bags only with tie downs. Do not keep valuable items in lose pockets of clothing, pickpockets are common in popular tourist destinations, in particular airports; train; bus stations and bust markets.
• Ensure your suitcase or bag has a lock, ideally a combination lock, this not only secures it or makes it less attractive to criminals in transit, it also then acts as a deterrent to curious cleaning staff when left at your accommodation.
• Always keep all you possessions in eyesight, do not think a cute little old lady next to you on the bus can’t be a thief, that’s just how they lull you into a state of false security.

Childrens trip to Kingdom

The Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World in Florida is one of the world’s most popular vacation destinations. Millions of visitors tour the Magic Kingdom Park each year and although it is the smallest of all four Disney Florida Parks, it is also the most crowded. It is not uncommon to see families touring the parks in the hot Florida sun, with parents yelling at their children and the children crying or screaming for something. This tends to happen as families spend a lot of money on this type of vacation and want to be sure to “get their moneys worth”. This leads them to drag their families throughout the park, with over-tired, hot and hungry children. It is important to remember that children function best when in their normal daily routine. Their days at Walt Disney World will be filled with early mornings, off schedule (or skipped) naps, changes in eating times, and late nights. Also the weather in Orlando can be extremely hot and humid or very rainy, depending on when you visit. It is crucial that parents understand that children will be on sensory overload and will be out of their routines when on vacation.
You can visit the Magic Kingdom with children and still have a fabulous time. If you are only able to visit for one day, you should arrive at the parks before its scheduled opening time. As the park opens you should visit Fantasyland (if traveling with small children) or Frontierland (for older children). A one day touring schedule is possible, however, if traveling with children you will have to be willing to limit your list of “must-see” attractions. With children, it is always better to allot two full days at the Magic Kingdom. This will allow you to tour at a calmer pace and allow your children to take in all that the park has to offer.
Your advanced planning when visiting the Magic Kingdom should include deciding what time of year to visit, what day of the week will be least crowded, and how many days you have to visit the Magic Kingdom. You should also review the park layout and policies before you arrive. Being knowledgeable on the attractions will help you decide which ones you would like to visit before even arriving in Orlando. Reviewing Disney information on stroller rentals, the Fastpass system and parades and shows are just a few examples of things you should strive to learn about before you arrive. This will allow you to maximize your time at the Magic Kingdom and concentrate on your Disney family vacation.
A little planning will help you create your best visit to the Magic Kingdom!

Travel to Spain

Transportation

Various airports are found in many cities of Spain such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao, Murcia, Malaga and Palma de Mallorca. Madrid and Bilbao boast of their modern and stunning airports designed by prominent architects. If you are a little tight with your budget you can try some of their low cost carriers such as ClickAir, easyJet, Blue Air, Sterling Airlines, Vueling and RyanAir.

The RENFE, Spain’s official rail carrier, and FEVE are rail systems connecting major cities of the country. They are considered to be the some of Europe’s finest because of its modern design and amenities, reliability and punctuality.

Buses, boats and car renting are also common for most people traveling and touring Spain. They are highly recommended if you want to avoid the volume of people using the train systems. You can also enjoy more the view and sceneries of the cities when riding in one these transport vehicles.

Lodging

There are various types of accommodations you can choose from when traveling Spain. Small villages located near the coasts are popular because of the warm welcome and friendly environment they give to tourists. Casa Rural or the counterpart of B&Bs in other countries is also a recommended option since it is strictly regulated by authorities, plus quality and price varies greatly. The Parador, a prominent state-owned hotel chain in Spain, can make your stay a unique since its locations are mostly found in historical places such as Moorish castles, convents, and haciendas.

Food and Dining

Spaniards are known for their exquisite taste in food and wine. They usually eat light with a lot of vegetables with a mixture of meat and fish. Lunchtime normally starts between 1:30pm to 2pm and ends before 9pm. Dinner is served at 8:30pm or 9pm. Between these times, nearly all restaurants and cafes are closed except for big cities that serve until midnight. To make your travel a memorable one, you could try one theses Spanish dishes: Mariscos (popular shellfish in Pontevedra); Pesca?to frito (mouth-watering fried fish served in southern Spain); Paella (rice dish that can be served with seafood, chicken, or rabbit); and Tortilla de patatas (egg omelet mized with fried potato).

Festivities

Since more than 75% of Spain’s populations are Catholics it is no surprise that many of its local and national festivals are celebrated in Catholicism to the religion such as the Holy Week, Fiesta de San Isidro (May 15 in Madrid), and Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos (parade for the 3 Kings, celebrated in the 5th of January). Other local celebrations you should watch out for are the Festival de Patios (2-week event when some locals open their houses to visitors to show their old Patios), Fallas (held in March in Valencia), Seville’s April Fair (consist of flamenco dancing, drinking of sherry and bullfighting), and the world-famous La Tomatina (a massive tomato fight in Bu?ol.

Why is Orlando Florida a great place?

Why is Orlando Florida a great place?

There are many answers to that question; Orlando is one of those special places that you simply must go to at some point in your life, why I hear you say? the answer is simple it is full of unique attractions. There is everything from watching spectacular killer whales perform mind boggling maneuvers with their human trainers to experiencing the awesome site of Dinosaurs feeding in a tropical forest landscape. It is one of those very special places in the World, where there is something to do for everyone, it is simply awesome.

Theme parks

These are the main tourist attraction in Orlando Florida, they are simply superb, and I cannot think of any reason why you shouldn’t make them your first port of call. There is something to do for every member of your family, which must be why they are so popular.

People say that Walt Disney World especially the Magic Kingdom is just for children, how wrong they can be, Lynn and I have sat next to people in their 70’s who absolutely love the theme park’s, its not unique to see an octogenarian getting a cuddle from Mickey Mouse.

Epcot is thought provoking for us adults, and a constant source of education, fun, and entertainment for children. Where else could you see modern crop propagation along side a Pirate battle taking place on the high sea in the Caribbean?

Disney Animal Kingdom is very special, you will be amazed at the mix of attractions from complex animatronics to watching wild animals in a natural environment, and you actually feel as if you are on an African Safari.

Disney Hollywood studios brings the frill and excitement of the big screen right to you, experience the death defying stunts and carefully crafted movie rides, you can even be part of a gangster street fight played out by highly realistic automatons, meet  the Hollywood greats such as James Cagney and John Wayne.

What’s there to do when you’re not in the Parks… or its way after dark? Day or night at Downtown-Disney area, choose from dining with dinosaurs to a distinctly Disney shopping extravaganza to catching incredible live music and shows!

How many Disney-Characters can you spot? Make sure you take your autograph book and a camera, you never know who you will come across, and Brer Fox can be seen near Splash Mountain, in the Magic Kingdom!

Swim With Dolphins

Whilst you are on your Orlando-Florida-Holidays, it would be silly not to take a swim with the dolphins at somewhere like Discovery Cove. I did this not too long ago and it is something that I know I will never forget, it was a truly great experience. Many other holiday resorts have water parks for your entertainment, they attract many people every year and Orlando Florida is no exception, Blizzard Beach and Typhoon lagoon are Walt-Disney properties, Aquatica is located just across the road from Sea world.

Universal Studios, Wow is the best adjective to describe this source of entertainment, meet Spider Man and that terrifying Great White Shark portrayed in Jaws, and feel the fear as he rises out of the water.

Orlando Florida Holiday’s where else could you ride the Sheikra, The very first dive coaster in North America – and it’s a good one! 200 feet up, and then straight back down again at up to 70mph… with a 90 degree drop.

Sky above, earth below and nothing but a massive thrill in between? Busch Gardens

Planning Orlando Florida Holidays? Orlando offers a wide range of accommodation from

Cheap Hotels on International Drive to themed Disney properties such as Disney-All-Star-Movie resort, some of the best Hotels include the Caribbean Beach Resort right in the heart of the magic; remember staying at a Disney Resort offers complimentary transport to and from Disney Theme parks.

Discover Cambrils in Costa Dorada

A little further south along the Costa Dorada from Salou, is the holiday town of Cambrils. It is apparent that, although Cambrils welcomes visitors and provides for them, it has never lost its original character as a fishing town. this is also a reason why Costa Dorada hotels and Costa Dorada apartments are still an insider’s tip.

Like all resorts on this stretch of Spanish coastline, Cambrils offers loads of glorious beaches. The sand is golden, the sea is warm and shallow; it is quite safe for youngsters of all abilities.

The sea also provides a major venue for water sports, which are very well catered for here. Visitors can try windsurfing, jet skis, sailing, diving, pedallos or hire a boat and sail along the coast. Sailing and windsurfing are particularly good as the wind is very favourable.

Off the beach, there are an equal number of facilities to be active. There are three excellent golf courses within easy reach, plus a municipal pitch and putt for all to enjoy. The local sports centres provide activities for youngsters in and out of the swimming pools.

To go further a field, hire a horse and go trekking in the nearby countryside. Or ride a bicycle and explore the delta of the river Ebro, with its unusual wildlife and rare plants.

For those who enjoy exploring on foot, the town of Cambrils is a must. The winding, narrow streets, flanked by traditional buildings with flower decorated balconies, are a joy. There are many original old buildings and a good enough selection of churches, castles, monuments, municipal buildings and towers to satisfy anyone.

Cambrils’ real claim to fame on the Costa Dorada, however, is its cuisine. It is regarded as the gastronomic capital of the coast. As well as serving many traditional Catalan dishes, there is a custom of modern and original cooking, but still based on the excellent local produce.

Fish and seafood play a major part in the cuisine of the town, as they are landed daily at the fish quay and sent straight to the restaurants from the fish markets. These are matched by the superb olive oil produced in the region, which is some of the best in Spain.

For those whose holiday is incomplete without shopping, Cambrils offers a wide variety of outlets. Based mainly in the old town and the port quarter, there is large selection of boutiques, tourist souvenir shops, local crafts and shops for everyday needs. To complete the shopping, one must wander round the two street markets, held each week in the port and the old town. Buy locally produced items to eat back at home and remind oneself of Cambrils.
